1/24 Taigen Tiger IR Battle Tank 2s lipo- IR compatible with Heng Long

Post by modler »

Been looking at these Taigen Tigers for a while. Not much info in the ad. It is fully proportional and has some interesting features. I like that it is IR compatible with HL 1/24 tanks. It came a few days ago and I did not have time to look at it until last night. I was very disappointed with the shipping damage. Gun Muzzle broken off, Sound level push button on TX was missing and later found inside the TX. Despite this damage, it fired up OK. I spent about 3 hours total repairing the damage and it's all good now.

This Tank has muzzle flash that works pretty good. Excellent sound system with 5 volume levels. Controls are similar to 1/24 HL with the throttle and steering on the right stick, On the left stick things are a bit different. L\R turret traverse works as expected, left down stick runs the up\down of the main gun muck like early HL 1/24 tanks. Left up stick is main gun FIRE with muzzle flash. I thought this was strange at first but now I like it because in battle tanks, he who gets the first shot and can continue to get the quickest shot will probably be the winner. After using this left stick for a while it becomes intuitive that this is the best place for the FIRE control. (IMO)

I opened it up to get a look at the radio circuit board, it looks similar to the HL circuit board and even uses the same connectors. Looks like you could swap in a HL boards in minutes. I know the HL boards are ROBUST and I am hoping these Taigen boards are as well.

Machine gun is very nice and has a "muzzle flash" like the main gun.

Mobility performance is superior to the HL tanks in most every way.

Transmitter has auto shut off as does the tank. If either sit around for more than ~5 minutes, they shut down thereby stopping any current draw from the batteries. Also Tank and transmitter has low voltage alarm built in! So you don't have to worry about overrunning the 2s lipo. :O

I keep finding more little things that make this thing the BOSS of 1/24 tanks.

The LED scoring system is unique and uses the rear tail lights as a score display. This is a better system than the HL score display system as it looks stock. When not in battle mode, it just looks like tail lights.

The only mod I am going to do is change the lipo connector to JST so I can use other batteries to tune the speed range to my liking based on where I will be running it. It is fast but it also can go slow. Has a nice default speed range but I always tune my models to my liking and the easiest to do that is change the battery voltage. I am thinking this thing will be very scale looking with a lower voltage pack. Ideal for my indoor test and evaluation track.

I really like this Tank and think it is a premium level 1/24 IR Tank. It's pretty good right out of the box. No mods required!

It comes with a detail package which includes bit and pieces to attach to to tank for more realism. Looks like some nice decals as well.

I got this for $61.00 delivered. The 1/24 Hl tanks are about $20 more. Both are fun and durable but Looks like the Taigen is the winer :D

I am uploading a video now, will post asap

2.4g TX works well. I had to work on this one due to shipping damage. I had to replace the volume button micro switch and did not have the exact one needed so it took extra time to get it just right with the right feel.

There is no metal barrel on this tank despite what it says on the box. That RED band on the muzzle is holding the rear of the muzzle together as it was broken in shipping. You can see the box took a pounding!

These are a nice compliment to the 1/24 HL battle tanks. The performance level exceeds the HL 1/24 tanks. This thing is fast and maneuverable with no track bogging in the turns

That one would be fun to paint and camouflage. With the relief-cast Zimmerit on there, if those are transfers, pressing them in place is going to be a challenge. Water-soak decals might work better if one is careful, patient, and has decal setting solution. But those 1/24 tanks sure fit well on your shelves with the model boxes in place as a background.

Yes Herr Doctor, storage space has become critical as I just keep buying more and more Tanks :O I bid on two more new Taigen Tigers @ $34.0 apiece and this morning got the shipping notice from ebay so my bid was successful. I am very impressed with the Taigen Tigers especially the electronics. I will be using the electronics from the two I just bought in other projects.

7 minute first impression video on the 1/24 Taigen Tiger (some confusion about how many sound levels, there are at least 5)

I now have 3 of these :O Besides being very good IR battle tanks, They have some good parts on them which I may need in future projects.

1. excellent 2.4g receiver with 2s low voltage alarm (with LV shut down), auto shutdown if transmitter goes to sleep due to inactivity (great for seniors who forget to shut things off) :eh:
2. Special high brightness muzzle flash LED that will work on a HL receiver in the main gun slot with a PNP connector
3. Special very realistic looking MG LED also PNP compatible with HL MG slot
4. Very nice headlight and taillight LED's
5. Nice high Q speaker PNP HL
6. Hi Q 2s 800mAh lipo
7, USB 2s charger
8 nice IR emitter and receiver set with connectors (PNP on HL and Taigen)
9.excellent twin motor gearbox with very good tracks.

The box says this Taigen is 1/24 scale but looks to be 1/25 scale next to the Tamiya Tiger which is 1/25 scale..

All 3 are IR compatible. These three tanks do not have the BB gun option. The Taigen and VsTank have muzzle flash and IR battle scoring displays. The VsTank also has Main Gun recoil.

Far right is 1/24 VsTank pro Tiger The VsTank Tiger looks to be a little bigger all around and is 1/24 scale. The other two seem to be smaller 1/25.

Torro (Taigen) is running a 10% off sale, with a goodly choice of 1/24 and 1/30. Of course, shipping here would be about a zillion dollars: https://www.torro-shop.de

Some good stuff in there. I have a rule that says "no new model purchases until last model purchase are in hand" :shifty:

I bid on two more Taigen Tigers @ $34+ $12 ship a piece from ToucanHobby (ebay site) so those should be here next tuesday 8)

You can never have too many Tigers I always say :D but, pretty soon I will have to start blowing them up to get rid of them :O

I swapped the stock lipo connector with a JST so I can use other batteries in this tank.

Re: 1/24 Taigen Tiger IR Battle Tank Transmitter modification

Post by modler »

I am modifying the transmitter so that I have switchable on\off forward\reversed function. The Forward and reverse with individual presets via switch control black SPDT switch F\R, red switch on\off. When off, tank dives as normal with throttle and turn on the right stick.

It works on the bench as I have figured out the resistor values for a low speed F\W presets. I think this would be a good mod for any IR battle tank as you could do a low speed forward\reverse assault with full attention on the main gun controls while the tank moves on its own at low speed 8)

Just need the time to wire it. :'(

Re: 1/24 Taigen Tiger IR Battle Tank 2s Transmitter upgrade

Post by modler »

Well, this is taking more time that I thought but after running the tank around indoors, have realized it uses a lot of battery power to run on smooth surfaces at low speed. This is due to the fact that the tracks are very wide and are made of rubber. These tracks get a lot of traction on most surfaces. The transmitter\receiver is over coming this with brute power to the tracks in turns. I am tuning the way it turns via the transmitter with some RTL logic. Yes I know this is getting to be a bit much but I also have the same problem with other 1/24 tanks in my collection including the KV 2 that I just got running to R\C. The KV 2 has the same issue because of the wide rubber tracks. Also a few dozer projects I have going also need this mod. So this is turning into a electronic job they may not be suitable for some tankers. I am a retired electronic technician so I tend to go deep with this stuff. :D

The switch on\off cruise and F\R low cruise speeds are working good with what I have here but the turning at low speed needs improvement due to the wide rubber tracks as they do not slip at low speed. Some slip is required for tanks tracks when turning L\R and if no slip then tank will do a both tracks turn. one goes in the direction of the turn while the other goes the opposite direction, sort of a rolling neutral turn. This uses way less power at low speed. I have three of these tanks so I will video the difference once the mod is complete.

No mods to the tank except for a JST lipo connector swap on the tank and the batteries.

more as I get time.

Re: 1/24 Taigen Tiger IR Battle Tank 2s lipo- low speed cruise mod with low speed turning @ low power

Post by modler »

To make this tank do what I want, it is going to require adding 1 PNP transistor and two resistors. I will show how I did it but it may take some time but it is worth it as it adds a new slow speed mode F\R with low power turning. One switch enables the mode and the other controls the direction. The high speed. throttle is now on the gun up\down stick for "power boost" in low speed mode. the right stick throttle is the brake. let off the brake with the enable switch in on position (red switch) and the tanks moves forward at low speed with quick low power steering. tank can run 4-5 times longer in this mode. I will do a video showing the tank in operation. If RED switch in OFF position, tank operates as stock mode. The tank is not modified, the transmitter has the mods.

I built this thing in 1979. (46 years ago) Black box and everything in it was made in the USA. (USA molding is on the right near the "P" LED. Still works good and has been well used and has been updated to 2s 350mAH lipo for years of power with no battery worries.
