WPL Ural Broom

As I am a little bogged down with the Leopard 1 build, wanted something quick, and fun to mess with, while I gain some inspiration to continue with the leopard.

While digging around I came across the Ural Metla. Metla is russian for broom. These were used in Afghanistan, and is essentially a Ural truck with the middle section of a BRDM-2 armoured car mounted in the back.

A while ago, I acquired a WPL URAL, so first job was to strip it down, and remove the the 2 channel rc I had installed.

Next came a mock up. This is all WPL parts , so will not be an exact replica, just a facsimile.

Roof details were removed, and the resulting holes filled. Plastic card was used as a backing.

As this is fitted with the WPL two speed gear box, the spare wheel carrier did not fit, so the gearbox, required a bit of hacking around, to allow the carrier to be installed.

Then as I had a spare motor laying around, I wondered if a bigger motor would fit? It did not. I have some others to try.

Finally, for now. The protection was mocked up and test fitted.

Your 'quick' pottering about has used more skills than my big'ish project already.

Quick question. Filler? Just car body stuff(the fine finish stuff)?

I'll be looking out for any motor upgrades you implement too.

I use "Green Putty" NOT car body filler which is far too bulky, It comes in a toothpaste type tube and is easy to apply once dry it is easy to shape with a modelling file or emery board,
If the Tube drys out after lying around just add water to revive it.

Motor upgrade is for the B36-3. For Shits and giggles I did try to move my Challenger with the B36-3. It failed. It was on less than ideal terrain, and it will definitely need weights on the front.

Aye, even I could whack a different cab on. Whether I could get it to stay on is a different matter.
A couple of hours, saw the central carcass of the BRDM-2 built. Thanks to Louis for the measurements. Next will be the viewing ports, and the details on the ends. This is where the fun begins. It looks like they just cut a sheet of metal roughly to shape, and welded it on.

If you want to make a prototype F-1 you may not succeed.... The RED engine will tear the transmission to shreds!
The base engine is already good, but the gearbox should basically be replaced with metal, as well as the cardan shafts, drive shafts and everything related to the chassis...
And put weights in the wheels.....
Mine was destroyed already in the 3rd minute of aggressive riding.
It's a TOY!
And it's not for nothing that many metal upgrades are produced to turn it into a usable model

Pavel. Thank you for your input. The truck was built, as a bit of fun during COVID, as a basic plastic model. It ripped the transmission apart in hours, with original very small motor. It has since been upgraded with all metal parts, as you suggest. As have the other two that are waiting in the wings. The red engine was just a little look to see if it would fit. Some time I try things on a not to be taken too seriously, trial. Or use the cheaper plastic parts to mock things up, before replacing with better quality parts, when or if they break.

This build and the M35 Vietnam Gun Truck I started today, should have been a bit of fun, but it has all gone Pete Tong. Shorted out a board, could not cut a straight line for toffee, had a glue spillage. But the worst bit! Scotland lost to France in the Rugby, denying England the Six Nations Championship. Much as that breaks my heart to say that.
