Motor recommendations

Post by menright »

I was just looking for a bit of advice about what motors I could use in my upcoming build. I ususally use brushed motors but am looking to use brushless in the next build and was looking for suggestions or advice. It will be for a 1/4 scale Challenger 2 tank, probably weighing in at 200kg.I am looking for motors that will move it along at a decent speed as well, not the usual lumbering 5mph.Any advice would be very welcome.

24V or 36V geared Scooter motors. For something that big you might want to do go big like 600W...IMHO. The higher the voltage, the more efficient the motor is as in it will use less current to do the same amount of work. I've used similar scooter motors in my 1/6th tanks and they have torque for days. A 1/4 scale Challanger is going to be HUGE.

NVM...you said you want brushless. Can't help ya there. Brushed scooter motors come in even bigger sizes like 1000W and voltages higher than 48V.

My 1/6th KV-2 made for paintball combat weighs like 120lbs or 55k and it is only using a set of 250W scooter motors at 24V. It runs around at a pretty good clip.

Brilliant, thanks for the advice. I have already used dual 600w powered wheelchair motors in my last 1/6 scale tank build. I get about 10mph which looks fine with loads of torque. In the new build I want more speed so it seemed that Brushless was the way to go plus I will have much more choice over controllers.

I would say wheelchair motors are geared too low which is why I didn't suggest them. I think they are running right around 150RPM. Scooter motors are more in the 400RPM range. The last time I looked at large brushless motors, they were quite expensive, but that was probably over 5 years ago and a lot has changed since then.

You'll probably have to gear the brushless motors down, as low speed, high torque brushless motors seem to be quite rare.

Those are scooter motors, but those don't have the gear reduction built in. You would need to create a gear reduction set for them.

Does anyone have any examples( links) to suitable scooter motors with gear reduction that would be suitable for a 250kg tank to move at 15mph or would it be nessessary to build a custom gearbox?

For that weight and speed, you're going to need some beefy brushless motors. Look into high-torque outrunners, maybe something from the Traxxas or Hobbywing lines. You'll probably need multiple motors and a good ESC setup to handle the current draw.
