[Support] Volkswagen Type 87 Afrika Korps 1/16
A quick (I hope) project to rebuild a RTR Volkswagen Beetle into a wartime Type 87 with balloon wheels. A set of tires, rims and various small bits was purchased on the www.fertigungswerk16.at website. The tires are cast from silicone.

Kazor: did the Type 87 come with the ragtop? I used to have a great book on the VW, but I gave it to a VW modeler who could use it. Oh, am I sorry I did that!

I see that the wheels, but not the tires, that come from the RTR VW match the VW in Dunkelgelb; whereas, the 3D printed tires but not the wheels, match those on the VW in Dunkelgrau. I know that for your knowledge and skill, Kaczor, this apparent mismatch is no problem. Thank you for showing your VW re-build for the Afrika Korps gang.

There were several types of rims, hubcaps, etc. The RTR model has "civilian" narrow tires. The Wehrmacht Type 87 had wider types. Both types are sold by colleagues from Austria:

I do like that website Kaczor, stuff for my Hanomag 251 as well as for my VW, I shall have to see if there is any money left after Santa has served his bill (Save money don't have grandkids).

I think I am about to upset someone

That is spot on Kaczor: the 3D printed tires and wheels exactly. I see that Fertigungswerk includes the correct rear view mirror as well. What an enjoyable project.

Replacing the wheels is not painless - the original ones are so packed that they cannot be removed without destroying them. The printed rims are marked "front" and "rear" (in German). The rear axles need to be cut by 10 mm. After driving tests, everything is fine. The driver in the "cold elbow" position requires a bit of modification to sit lower. Additionally, instead of a helmet, he will have a cap.

That looks cool. We have a static one at the field and it looks great parked by the airfield but I'd love to see an RC one running around

I started a very similar build a couple of months back Kaczor
I've fitted a set of wheels and tyres printed by wcp models, I've pictured it alongside my revell VW that I rc'd a couple years back and the last pic is what I'm aiming for
Cheers, Lee.
