Possible solution to Jagdpanther IR emitter mounting problem

Post by Mackem »

I stumbled across this on Welshdragons site and was wondering if it could be used as a 'nice' way to mount the IR emitter on a Jagdpanther.

http://www.welshdragonmodels.co.uk/imperial-modellbau-infra-red-night-vision-device-for-heng-long-jagdpanther-116-scale-767-p.asp

Opinions from all our IR battling guru's gratefully accepted.  ;) ;D

Cheers

Thats a nice looking bit of kit. As far as mounting an IR emitter, it depends on the dimensions of the night vision tube. You will need either 3mm or 5mm to take the emitter led. It may be possible to either drill out the metal part, or make a new part from either styrene or brass tube. You need 10mm length to create a focusing tube, and attach the wires.

Maybe Andy can enlighten us on the actual dimensions?

If the dimensions are similar to Martins scratch built IR set up on his brilliant Panther II then it should be possible given your info on the dimensions of the IR emitter.
Unfortunately this item is shown as out of stock on Andy's web site.
I've PM'd him to see if he is re-stocking, or if he can get me one.

RCACN RoE in USA, and proposed Rules of Engagement in Russia/Krimea/Ukraine for mounting of the emitter:

Max bore of the emitter tube is 6mm inside diameter. Minimum setback for the emitter in the tube from the front casting disregarding any eyebrow on the emitter tube is 9mm.

Also, it is recommended to paint the inside of the emitter tube flat black. The IR beam is not a straight shot like a laser, but fans out to an extent at mid range, then becomes again more focused towards the outer limit of range. The closer you put your emitter to the outer end of the tube, the more the fan out is pronounced and the less range you have, and mounted at the very outer end the fan can nail a tank sitting next to you as long as his receiver is ahead, even slightly, of  your emitter. Our ranges run from 20m to 35m, sometimes more, depending on weather conditions, using the Tamiya system.

Proper dimension emitter tube giving correct diameter and LED set back can be found at these links:
http://www.etoarmour.com/product_detail.php?productID=DP20
http://www.etoarmour.com/product_detail.php?productID=DP19
With this tube, you can bore a hole in any area of your main gun mantlet and install the tube for proper emitter/main gun coordination. taking care to align the emitter tube to the main axis of your main gun.

Shipping for orders to UK and EU runs about $15 or so, depending on the weight and the mood of the US Post that particular day.

Does it traverse and elevate with the main tube?

I think its safe to say that we have a lot less room to play with in the UK, and the engagement ranges are typically measured in inches  ;) ;D ;D ;D

Just curious about your system is all. I did something similar on my JT some years ago, and will do it again after the refit. Had it on the mantlet, attached to the double holed lifting lug. Used a bracket on the front, and a Marklin 1 Guage operating hook and loop coupler turnbuckle, which was about the correct size and worked, on the rear. That way I could dial in the emitter for proper horizontal alignment with the main tube. However, after the refit the Falken device will be attached to forward right hatch, and will pivot and elevate with the main tube if humanly possible. If that don't work, I'll put it on the gunner's periscope attached to the main gun inside the compartment. That way it will pivot and elevate-depress.
Gave the RCACN and Proposed Russian Fed/Krim rules because the dimensions given give you optimum range, and are used in USA combat and will be in our neck of the woods for the inspections prior to combat competitions.
