This is why hobbies are important

Post by Herr Dr. Professor »

I need to get my dear late wife's name removed from the deed to the house.

First I called the office of the county Register of Deeds whose nice operator told me that I needed this form and that form, but there was no need for the form that proved my dear late wife is and has for some time been dead.

So I filled out some online form and printed it and copied an old form. Then I drove this form and that form and the old form twenty miles to the County Register of Deeds Office so I could get the other form to complete this form, but the nice woman at the window wasn't sure what to do, so she went back to the nice man who explained to her that I also need another form, so the nice woman at the window could tell me that I needed another form, and then the nice man himself came to the window to tell me that it was $2.00 for a copy of another form I needed to complete this form so I paid the $2.00, but now I need to get yet another form online and print out two more forms, and then maybe I can get this form complete so I can get the second form changed, but usually people just pay a lawyer.

These experiences make joyful times out of even the most frustrating moments with hobbies.

Livin' the paperchase dream right there!

Seems like it's easier to clean out someone's bank account illegally, than cancel the internet for a deceased friend. What do you mean you need a copy of the death certificate?

Herr Doc,
I am sorry to hear that you went through such a rigamarole to get this extremely personal Task completed. I think that if anything ever happens to Griffy, I'll just leave his name on the Deed.

Painless

That just delays the whole process until either you pass or you sell the property. In fact I would say that if you leave the property to someone and they have to clear two deceased names from the title, it would probably delay the process for 6 months to a year while they track down all the relatives that might have a claim to the property. Probate is something you want to avoid at all costs. Or in another case, if you were to become incapacitated for some reason and your family had to sell your property to finance your care, they would be taking on the financial burden of your care while trying to straighten the whole thing out.

My mother lost her significant other two years ago and because he didn't get certain things done, she's still dealing with legal issues of property and removing his name from things.

This reminds me that I need a new will... :) Good luck Doc getting it all straightened out.

:haha: Sometimes a sense of humor helps. I did not scream at anyone, but remained calm and courteous. I did not cry driving home. I just got home and wrote that goofy sentence to blow off steam. :haha:

Good Morning, Herr Doc!
Tankme makes good points. I have a Will in which everything I have is left to Griffy ( Natch') I have no living Family and fully expect to pass before my Spouse. In the fullness of Time, the property will go to some young relative of his, no doubt, that will appreciate a small ranch up in the Rockies. If Anything happens to Griffy, I will deed our stuff to his Family. He has a younger Brother. Who knows tho'. A small Park on the outskirts of Gardner might be established by one of us. Something people could come and walk through and enjoy Nature. A more fitting remembrance of a couple of Wolves who loved their Land.

My mother has a decent sized property in Graham, WA that she is having a hard time taking care of now. I'm in Texas so I've been trying to convince her to move here as she doesn't have any family up there anymore. My grand daughter is here in Texas along with my daughter so I'm not moving to WA state. Plus I'm not a fan of that state anyway... :) One of these days I will sadly be in the same boat trying to deal with her estate. It's all part of the circle of life it seems. The land my mother owns was owned by her significant other which he got from his brother who bought it with a settlement from an accident. It is now hers and paid off, but the home was built in the 1970s and needs a lot of maintenance at this point. She's just about emptied her savings trying to get the repairs done over the last year. If I had been near her, I could've helped with some of it. She is my mother and dare I say...stubborn. :) I will probably be the same way when I get to be her age. Luckily she seems to be in fairly good health so it will probably be a while before I start the paperwork nightmare.
