scale canvas framework help

Post by maker1966 »

Hi could anyone help me with a project (need advice). I'm building a 1/6th model and need to build a canvas support frame, problem is the photo references I'm using are not great and can't work out what thickness metal I would need to do the frame in scale ish... I was thinking 4mm but that feels a bit big >

Feed the backs mate !!
What is it you are trying to achieve>?
A vehicle design would help a lot for the community to assist.
Is it a truck, half track, .................Zeppelin ??!

Share the picture you are having trouble with & perhaps we can help

sorry Raupenschlepper Ost type 3, almost scale. Rolling chassis is done, but still making small refinements along the way drive and Idle wheels made as temp parts as currently working out the better looking wheels.
shopping right now for drive motors and working on parts to make the rear bed, cabin at the half way mark.

Could try umbrella material as it’s easy to manipulate & takes paint fairly well.
Or depending on your scale impression something like a light canvas similar to laundry bags.
The umbrella stuff is also very robust

I think I'd find some pics like these, and compare the canvas frame to things like the windshield frame middle piece to get you an approximate size for your frame tube based on your model. Cool project!

Thanks folks, I've been trying to get good photos to compare details with but often what I find is either too small or poor quality when view in close. Also as I'm still new to this some of my items are over scale to make them a tad stronger..

As a footnote, I am aware of another model maker has already built on of these.. Super nice work. I have designed and made this independently

Looking at those four corner uprights, in my opinion, they look about an inch square, possibly a little less.
And as 4.23mm is an inch at this scale, 4mm would appear a good guess for those uprights.

But, if they are less than an inch, three quarters is a gnats cock under 3.2mm.
Going on what you stated about preferring a tad on the more robust sizes. Maybe 4mm would be the better option than say 3.5mm for ease of finding a supply ;)
