Tank projects backing up now...

Post by MrChef »

I never understood members with so many projects working, stopping, starting, forgotten, lost, restarted and reinvigorated, etc.

I never thought or even dreamed I would have tank projects backing up! This is absolutely Not a complaint. I was plugging along with the T34 and that came to a screeching halt last month because I'm happy to say I started a new very busy job. Combine limited free time with ridiculously high heat, humidity and rainy weather this summer and the tank works ground to a standstill. Then the Torro Tiger addition which wasn't really planned, is screaming at me to at least adjust the color and lightly weather before I even decide what to do with it for the new group build. Then there's my King Tiger that I planned to do some winter camo on this fall before I do a total redux next spring! Then I'm even considering doing a Taigen 75mm Sherman kit 8O And then there's my Tiger obsession again calling me to build a Mid war Normandy unit. Annnnd at the end of the short list I've been building a Leopard 2A6 in my head with all that I've researched about it...

I'm grateful for all of this mind you.

But a question to those of you in a similar situation, do you take/keep notes? How many projects do you have going at the same time? I could see doing two comfortably if I was in my off season. More if I was retired.

I'm Seriously grateful. I'll keep on tanking...

I'm sorry, MrChef, but that's not a back up; that's a warm up.
My FAMO is more toward finished now, just headlights, weathering, figures....
And I have started the PzKw. IV F1.
Then I spotted a HengLong Sherman to which I must have added markings and a few stowage items so long ago that I cannot remember: in fact, it has a crystal set transmitter and receiver.
Oh, and there is a box of parts for the SEP I and SEP II Abrams
And the M10 still needs markings, weathering, ammo, and crew.
And I am drooling over my Will-and-Catherine SdKFz. 251.
And now I cannot even find my Will-and-Catherine FLAK 88; I suspect it's hiding where I put it for safe keeping until I get to it.
When you are forty or so behind---that's a backup.

The secret, or at least one solution, is to retire early, get divorced, get the kids to buy a house and move out and then turn your entire home into a hobby workshop. You can then devote all your waking hours to your hobbies (all of them) and their associated projects / builds.

Finance can be an issue but thats where this forum helps. Share what you are doing and up pops all sorts of mates who can help out with specialist skills or parts and shared mini projects. We all have different skills and equipment, eg 3D printing, electronics etc making the unattainable possible, and sharing these skills is a great way to make new mates, globally.

Right now l'm focused on 1/76 model rail guns, bringing to model railways all the latest tricks which we use on tanks here these days and utilising the latest model rail technologies. But l'll be back, looking for help! As a bonus, mates you get to know here keep in touch, even when you don't, which is precisely what prompted this post. Hope you guys are all keeping well

A Sherman? Really? So proud of you right now! :wtf:

I do keep files on my research for each tank/build. I have about three spiral bound college ruled binders that I keep notes in (one for electrics and wiring, two for build notes and measurements) I save my pictures in their own file (numbered in order) so I can keep track of where I left off. Finally my build threads here on the forum keep me up to date on a project if I was to start a second...

One tank at a time for this guy. Personal scatterbrained history has proven to me that starting another project with one on the go means that both rarely get finished. RC tanks (7 on the backburner), model tanks, Coleman lanterns/stoves/irons/lamps, Lee Enfields, old fishing lures, old vehicle restoring/maintaining--they all get tackled one category project at a time.

Doesn't mean I don't gather things for each project (all the furniture and hardware is ready for my hideously sporterized Lee Enfield No4 MKI), but they don't get started until the time is ready to get them done. Plus you've gotta go fishing, boating, hunting, cottaging, driving twisty roads, and all of those other hobbies!

And +1 to all of Ecam's note taking and photodocumentation!

I have more than I should in the making but I eventually finish them. I like to come back after several months/years!
I never really finish a model though...
Even those like the Stuart that look finished are not.

Welcome to the club....*squirrel*....

Seriously though, sometimes I so make notes on my builds as to what I need to purchase or what needs to be done. I tend to start so many projects because I love to build them and them running, but I hate doing the finishing work (painting, weathering, 3D print smoothing, etc). I decided this year to get some of my old projects done. Well I did get the T34/76 finished so there's that. The T49 is close so it will probably be finished next. The PZ3 is primed with tracks removed ready to be blued. I think that will be finished next. All of that while the Kranvagn gets built...

I HAVE to have at least two tanks in build status at any given time as I run out of parts for one and have to switch to a different project.

So as an example this is for just one part I'm working on. The printed picture (will go in the file) and my one of my spiral bound note books with my notes, drawings and measurements.

Image

On my computer in my pictures section I have a folder called Tank Folders. In that I have 18 sub folders with thousands of reference pictures. One of them is called build ideas, that gets new additions all the time. Many of those pictures migrate to a unique folder (the Dragon Wagon is a recent example).
I keep a separate folder titled Forum Builds (and named sub folders) with all the pictures used in the forum build threads saved in order of posting (a lesson learned from the photo bucket fiasco). And yes I periodically back them up to a memory stick.
