1/16 Opel Maultier - Reusing this topic as im reworking the 1/10 files to 1/16

Post by ziddan »

ORIGINAL POST BELOW IN THE SPOILER

Long Time No See. Or work on this project for that matter.

So i stalled out on the 1/10 Maultier when i got derailed into the 1/16 Pz2, which then stalled out because i got annoyed that i wasnt getting it driving well.

Had just picked up a JJRC Q60, 6x6 truck looking a bit like something WW, went for the 6 wheel version over the 4wheel one because of no real difference in cost, even though it had some more parts, with the intent of modifying to to become a 1/16 Maultier.
But i ended up liking it after having put a 2 speed gearbox in it so i decided to cut it down to 4 wheels and use the spare axle for a custom Maultier based around WPL(and similar) parts.
Then another but, id have to buy WPL parts. Cheapomode kicked in and i decide to build around the left over one speed gearbox and axle, why but stuff i can print? There are lots of WPL compatible printable parts to remix off of.

I originally started this 1/16 version Maultier back when i was still working on the Pz2, i got it it to the point where it could drive and steer before stalling out in annoyance at the printed tracks breaking.

And now im back at this again due to a friend of mine wanting to get himself and his kids into RC, they are pretty young so he has decided on 1/16 crawlers due to the low speed and smaller space requirement than faster and larger models.
WPLs are cheap so he decided to go with those and just ordered up a full metal kit for himself and a couple of RTRs for the kids.

Ive also decided to pick up some stuff to make the truck i have better (locked diffs for one) as well as a c24-1 KM.

And while browsing the site i saw they had pretty cheap metal treads for their E1 model, made me think, i took some measurements of the tracks for my Pz2 and 1/16 Maultier and found that two kits would allow for the slightly longer Pz2 and slightly shorter Maultier at a total of around 60 bucks.

No they wont look exactly right but im okay with cutting some corners for the sake not breaking the budget (or printed track links) and getting these to projects back on track(s) :P

This is where i got to before stalling. most parts that are multiples arent in the 3d model, whats already printed is in PLA, except the tires which are in TPU.

This weekend ive been reworking the Cabin, hood and fenders from what they were for 1/10 and making them into chunks that will fit my Mars2 resin printer.

As it is it drives and turns well on flat ground (with the left over axle which has a diff) and i will see if it does okay offroad later on, im aware that i may have to end up making it a two motor setup with mixing for proportional drive for it to actually work in real world conditions.

Further posts, and a pic of the what is printed and together will be added in its own post at the end of the topic.

Hey all!

I just did a bit of an intro post but as it was noted that many of those are never read i though id kinda redo it here.

I got back into ground based RC at the start of last year efter being out for about 20 years, had a Marui Big Bear back in the nineties, built and flew some foamboard planes+drones over the last decade but have since fallen out of that.

The reason i found this page was because i was searching around for info on the Opel Maultier, ive started on upscaling one of the small models i found over on thingiverse and making it RC.

This after doing the same with a Kubelwagen over the last two weeks:

So onto the the subject of this topic, the Opel Maultier:
Image

Here is where im at for now, the front end is untouched as ive been working on the track assemblies:
Image

Here is the first bogie i assembled, a drive sprocket and a bit of tread:
Image

For the frame rails im using aluminium U profile as thats quick and easy, just bolting the rest of the bitz to it, pretty much everything behind the cabin is ready to be assembled and i will get onto that tomorrow because its late night here now.

My next step when it comes to modeling/remixing is figuring out a diff, im looking at the Ossum rear axle mk3 (free files) and remixing those to fit.

Im going to try incorporating a track steering brake based on brake bands around drums on the output axles between the diff and drive sprockets, actuation will be by the steering servo, the idea being that it should have enough slack to allow for fine steering without engaging but as the steering input gets larger it should start to apply braking to the axle in the direction of the turn.

Does any of the purchasable rc half tracks have something like that?

Will see if it works out later on.

Anyways, i thought this forum would be a good place for this as others with a special interest and skills would perhaps be interested and could give tips from experience.

I think you are going to fit right in! I have a printer, but not the skills to use it yet. Love the Kubel, I will be watching as you continue.

Got all the printed parts that are ready to go together mocked up together, the axles the bogies will mount to should go the full width so so each pair sits on the same treaded rod, for now its just bolts to see how it looks as its late and i dont want to be noisy with my rotary tool to cut the axles.

Alright, Got a ossum rear axle/diff slightly remixed to use bearing and threaded rod i had on hand.

Ive started on making the steering brake, no idea if it will work yet, turns out im making an old style drum brake.
Shown below is the drum which attaches to the wheel and the "brake pad", not sure yet if im going to have a wedge pulling into the gap or an oval rotating in there but whichever will be spring loaded so the amount of steering applied will increase the force gradually.

Gearbox is done for the moment.

Image

It runs and shifts, shifting between high and low is obviously handled by a servo, one can glimpse that im using a cam and slot style way of transforming the rotary servo output into linear motion.
The gears remain as in the above pic but i had to change the outer casing a little bit to make space for the carrier that moves the gear between its two positions.
As shown it is currently in low gear, shifting into high is done by moving the large lower leftmost gear to the right, it has slots to engage the knobs on the green gear.

Image

Now onto designing mounts for the gearbox, its position is where i designed the gearbox but now that its done i think it can be lowered a bit.
Then (likely remixing) a drive shaft to connect to the diff and then a front axle/suspension (from Ossum Jeep parts).

With the relatively large gear ratio it has i could probably have used a way smaller motor but im going with stuff i have on hand for now, adding holes for a different motor later on should be a piece of cake.

Front axle, steering, suspension, gearbox mounts, etc are all designed and currently printing.

When the print is done and parts are assembled i should be able to do a first test drive :D

WOW! BRAVO! Although I have not followed all the threads on 3D printing, I cannot recall anyone who has printed his or her own high/low transmission. Now if any of you wizards want to correct me on that, please do.

Here we go, the cab has finished printing and can be put together, the roof is still loose and ill reprint the grille in resin as the top would take a lot of smoothing and the text in unreadable.

Image

The seats are hollow so the electronics can sit in them, from the underside later on.

Now onto making the mounts for the bed.

Take your Mule to work day today.

First outdoor test drive, shifting works no issues, very little weight on the treads so not a lot of grip, all the weight of the bodywork, gearbox, motor, battery etc is all in front of the treads.

Should be better when the bed is done and a larger battery can be hidden on or under it.

Left the roof off for the drive since its not attached yet and would just bounce away.
