1/16 M8 Greyhound

Post by CaptainSpeedandPower »

Hi all,

For my first vehicle I have decided to do an armoured car, mainly because I think designing my own tracks and idlers etc is a little ambitious, but I also want to be able to have a turret and cannon. I decided on the M8 Greyhound because it has a relatively simple shape, and due to its mostly small size it should be easy to print. I've also been inspired by the story of one of these supposedly managing to destroy a Tiger.

I imagine most of you know what the vehicle looks like but I'll attach a photo anyway to demonstrate the rendition that I'm aiming for (with both the front and the rear side skirts fitted, as well as a rear mounted 50 cal):

What CAD system are you using? I've made a start on one in Fusion 360, but it kind of stalled out when I got to looking for drive shafts short enough to make it work...

I'm going to use a WPL B16 for the base, and so designing starts with a crude but good enough mock-up of the chassis. This took me much longer than I would like to admit, but for an accurate print I needed to make one.

I'm using Fusion360 as well, and I don't know if I'll be able to get the drive shafts to work or not yet. I imagine I'll either have to make an incredibly thin transfer case or use two of the shorter driveshafts that go inbetween each of the rear axles instead of the regular longer ones. I'm determined to make it 6x6 though, as otherwise I will feel like I haven't properly recreated it.

You should check out this guy's PDF build log on the Frag website.

Here is the current state of the rim and tyre. I'll add hub caps later but I'm too lazy at the moment.

Once the axles are aligned with the blueprints it's very easy to see just how close they are to each other. Here are the axles in their normal arrangement:

Compared to how they are aligned with the blueprints:

Here are a couple test prints of the wheels. Green and green is version 1, and black and white is version 2. Both rims are printed in PLA, and both tyres are printed in TPU.

Unfortunately, I still can't get the wheels to fit onto the axles right, and so more changes will be required.

Just a note, Cap'N Speed: Don't think that TankMe is the only one tuned in here: I am watching enviously and cheering--and I'd bet many more are, too.

I do think it's a neat project though. The FRAG build is a lot of custom casting of parts so if it could be 3D printed, I'm all ears.

Thanks for the support, although don't expect anything anywhere near as impressive as the frag build. If anyone notices any historical inaccuracies it would be very helpful to point them out before I end up making a Saving Private Ryan Tiger-esque Greyhound
