RAL red primer JAGDTIGER
RAL red primer JAGDTIGER
I was researching the color for the JP metal hull and interior and obviously red primer of a certain color was used. Many web sites argue and document the progression and subtle changes to the primer. In my research I found and compiled a neat little photo history of Jagdtiger #331. Belly pic of primer from a late war tiger. Built in October 1944, this Jagdtiger was captured near Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Germany in March 1945.
Pics: Apparently hit by Sherman at ~200yds? and then loaded on hauler, then train, then at Aberdeen.
Interest to note the line made by the primer along where the schurzen would have hung (primer line best seen in 4th and 5th pics). Then, in later photos, this is painted over. Also note the damage to topfblend...easy to tell it's the same tank...

Re: RAL red primer JAGDTIGER
I think you answered one of my running questions xrad. I always wondered weather the base colour was sprayed on with the side skirts attached, so the primer would show under any missing skirts. I plan on having a missing side skirt or two on my Tiger and would love the primer colour to show, just didn't know if it was accurate.

well, maybe later in the war when skirts were the fashion and speed was required in assembly. But I read that painters were also very consistent and picky with their work.
I think that if your vehicle was brought back for retrofitting, then cammo should be under the skirts. I always feel you can do whatever you want like mcevoyi says...just as long as it doesn look like fingerpaints (actually had a friend paint a model with fingerpaints)!
Anyway, as for Italian vehicles, they are still making cr*p! At least my two Alfa GTV6's were rusting right through!
PS: I'm Italian so I can rip on my cousins working at Fiat.

xrad ,great pictures and a valid point, can't see the germans not being consistant in the way they would apply primer or paint for that matter, also have wondered if say a Tiger-I was sent back for refitting and say it was Dark Grey(dunkelgrau),and it was sent back in late 1943 would they repaint to the new standard tan(dunkelgelb nach muster) or even camo, then if a track guard came off could their not be evidence of the earlier color?Just thinking that you have raised a good point.Blake

Re: RAL red primer JAGDTIGER
Your probably right. I doubt that when your factories are being bombed, you don;t want to waste time sandblasting off undercoats. But on the otherhand, the Germans seemed very stringent in their construction techniques. Probably comes down to each factory/. assembly area. If done in the field, probably maintains original color underneath.
Re: RAL red primer JAGDTIGER
the color underneath the skirts may be the same color but you could always make the paintwork lighter with no camo applied.................oz

Re: RAL red primer JAGDTIGER
I just LOVE the Jagdtiger.....
I don't know how many of you have seen this behemoth in person in Aberdeen or its brethren in Europe put my God it is H U G E !
I took some pix last fall with my JT on the real JT. The earth must have shook to the core when these monsters rolled in. They had just finished the cosmetic restoration of the Elefant and it was in the front parking lot. I took some pix of my Chevy Tahoe next to it for scale. Besides, how often do you get to park your car next to a rare German tank. The JT makes the Elefant look small. I know that the Elefant was just cosmetic restoration, but it just kills me to see all those treasure rusting away out there. I hope the give more of them such a face-lift. Saxondog and i would e hapy to paint them if they prep the hulls. They are suposed to move this collection to Fort Lee in VA. The new director Joe Ranier replaced Bill Atwater, I met with him last fall and he seems to be a real gentleman. I wish him luck.
Thanks Xrad for the photo spread on the JT. Nice job Bob thecommandernj

Your Tahoe is HUGE! Should have parked behind the JT (like the hunter's photos of their kills)
