1/16 M9 trailer

Post by Will01Capri »

So whilst i have been taking a break every now & then from building some other models, i have been working on a new project
M9 45ton trailer
Some pictures here for a teaser, but it will be a mix of 3Dprinted parts and machined metal items so i can ensure it is strong and fit for purpose hauling hardware over various terrain

I have been paying particular attention to how the wheels & suspension work on the model so that it articulates well for off road running. Load so f bearings and bushings to use, but should be fun

Watch this space for how the model comes together

Brilliant and a proper trailer for the haulage of heavy vehicles and long overdue,
Have you considered the optional fitting of a winch?
Put me down for one please Catherine.
Hopefully the usual financial arrangements will apply.
I think I am about to upset someone :haha:

Thanks Shaun
I think William has in mind some German ones aswell, so he will be doing some trailers of various sorts, but between CAD & making 251s he is rather busy.
I should say he is keeping very busy indeed
If you want one for sure you can have one, we will just keep in touch for once the current build list is completed, so most likley somepoint in the new year.

As for the winch, he has told me that the pulleys and snatch blocks and sheaves on this model are being built so they work, therefore the winch on the Diamond T will be able to be hooked up thru the trailer and winch up the vehicles. I am looking forward to seeing one put together and to the test

I want to show the Diamond T that is also built, is capable of dragging such a trailer
phpBB [video]

Please ignore the rather crude setup, but i had to quickly test that the dual 370 motor setup driving the rear axles was going to be up to the job of pulling a trailer with a tank on top

We are going to be making traction blocks which will be used to weigh down the model for towing activity, thats what the drill is simulating in the video haha

The trailer is going to have some very sturdy axles and everything is mounted on bearings to allow it to roll freely

I cant wait to get it pieced together asap

Some small updates
Something i have been working on in the evenings after busting up my fingers with scalpel blades, deburring tools and files and all sorts and sniffing the fumes of lots of glue, i have been doing alot of CAD for the M9 trailer.
It will be designed as a self build kit eventually. Many parts will be machined or CNC'd and we will also do our fair share of manual machining on the mill.

Before we can kick off the tooling though in larger batches, we have to trial build a few prototypes
Here are some checks of how the M9 dolly is progressing. Everything is mounted on metal bearings and has flexible bump stops to help smoothen the ride

With some tweaks to give the front wheels more ride height, this will also allow a little more articulation from the wheels.

As usual some heavy engineering for such a small model, but it should allow it to run nicely even with a proper load.

More to follow, but until then, i will be assembling suspension units on some 251s, wish me luck

I like the idea of a kit, I wonder if you have considered fitting a 5th wheel on the dolly allowing it to be the second part of a double bottom trailer combination.
I think I am about to upset someone :haha:

I have to admit, i hadn't considered it. But sure enough it could be easily added
Maybe something for the New Year to look at, i am just hoping to finish up this years worth of builds and designs and then maybe have some rest over Christmas hols for a bit so i can re-fresh :)

A wee bit of an update
The prototype trailer is built, now going to get some metal parts made to make this a proper heavy hauling trailer

Threw the 1/4 ton utility truck in for good measure to give an idea of size of this M19 unit!

Its a big model combo in 1/16.
Will need to get a Comet made for the trailer soon enough aswell.

The prototype trailer is now getting played with by the kids and they are going to give feedback on it, and we can check the highly stressed parts to see if updates are needed. But this has come together very nicely. More details to add, but will do that on the final model once the metal parts are done.

We can conduct some haulage trials at least whilst we wait for more parts to arrive, but we will be adding some weight and doing some driving trials with the Diamond T.

Right, best get back to assembling parts on the 251's again. As with everything, its good to have a distraction and a rest break.

indeed, all my designs get thoroughly tested, i love handing the controls to the kids. i don't get too precious over them because i rather they un earth the weak bits so i know thats something to make better in future.
My son said he had already stood on the trailer with one foot, i mean why? it would certainly break if i did that haha
