Tamiya Jagdpanther question

Post by BarryC »

Hi Folks,

Is the Tamiya Jagdpanther an early or late version or somewhere in between?

TIA,
Barry

Late. It has multi piece barrel and bolted mantlet. Early one has single barrel and not bolted mantlet.

Here's what Tamiya says about their 'Late' model, Barry- "Late' being the designation of their model corresponding, in the main, to the G2 version. In the kit, they supply the early three-piece exhaust system, as well as the later 'shielded' variation (an almost unique feature of the G2). When building mine, I opted for the early exhaust- just because it's not beyond the bounds of possibility (given the spares shortage), that a damaged G2 could have had the system fitted, and because I like it more :D It's great for detailing
Also, here's a lively discussion on the differences between the G1 and G2 variants:

Perfect

Given the state of affairs in Germany at the time I agree "almost" any configuration might have possible!

Thank you,

The Tamiya Jagdpather is somewhere in between but has more G2 features so it's easier to go that way if you're into details. The idler wheel, hull shape and roof layout of the Tamiya are correct for a G2 as far as I can tell and the bolted mantlet is a G2 feature but was also present on some later G1.

The tool rack is a G1 feature and Tamiya have used a G1 center plate on the rear deck with a more bolts that are countersunk and different size filler caps. G2 models all had the tools mounted on the rear deck as did some G1 as a field modification. The jack block on a G2 is mounted near the spare track links. I've never seen a photo of a G2 with an early exhaust or read that anywhere else but I'm no expert so I'm not saying it didn't happen. The G2 also has a crew heater on the rear deck.

There are a few other subtle differences and a really good summary on this blog if you are interested: https://www.track-link.com/forums/site_blogs/33056/flat

If you enjoy those spot the difference games, here's a basic comparison of the two:

Sorry Barry haven't been that active here and looks like you have been taken care of !

I just built one and it is quite nice, both horizontal and vertical movement on the main gun and a nice recoil.

Michael.
