Hello!

Post by burniefloyd »

Hello all,
I am (obviously) a new member from the Northeast US. I just bought my first tank but with the exception on the mid years I have been into RC cars and trucks since I was a kid. I learned a ways back that I preferred building and restoring to driving. Being a tickle middle aged man I find that rc cars don't have the same character as they did way back but that's an intro for another forum.

Anyway, while waiting for coats of paint to dry on my Tamiya semi truck I found a 1/16 Heng Long M1A2 on the local classifieds. I know Tamiya is the gold standard but HL seemed to have a decent following online so for $50 I picked it up. I am not positive the age but I am pretty sure I saw 2018 in the manual somewhere. It seems pretty much new, the lady I got it from said her father displayed it on a shelf. It has a 2.4ghz controller, metal tracks, metal caterpillar, metal wheel and zinc alloy gears. I popped in a lipo battery and it started right up, I think it is faster than my scx10 rock crawler lol.
Well that is where I am at, I came across your forum mentioned on another site while I will searching for a solution to the airsoft cannon I will post on another thread about.
Nice to meet you all and I can't wait to really dig into the build threads.
Jason

Hello and welcome to the forum Jason

Sounds like you picked up a very good deal there
Sadly the old pot metal gears aren't up to much, they are probably the worse version you can get
Even with that, it's still a deal not to have walked away from ;)

As for using a Lipo, I'm not sure if your version of MFU supports them, as in safety wise with a built in anti fast discharge backup. Sadly some have had a few problems.
But I'm guessing you're used to those type of batteries.

Anyway, enjoy the forum.
Mick.

Man, the box made the gears sound like a great deal :haha: live and learn.

I didn't think about the lipo beyond not having a low voltage cutoff, glad I didn't make it outside and was just using it for testing as the included nimh was dead. I think I have a nimh setting on my charger but I will have to make a set of Tamiya plugs.

Welcome to the modelling meat-grinder, Jason  :lolno: This hobby takes no prisoners, but can take much of your time- and cash too. :haha:

Have a look at Barry C's exemplary build, just to see just what can be done with the Abrams:

Hello Jason,

Nice tank, I would of bit on that one too! Have a look around. So much talent here with real working pieces of art. Good to have you on board!

Cheers,
Eric.
