Have I got this right?
This is a Sherman barrel length question.
The earliest Sherman's were given the M2 75mm L31 until the production of the M3 75mm L40 caught up.
Am I right in thinking the L40 and L31 are the barrel lengths which are multiples of the barrel bore, which would mean the difference in length of the two barrels is 9 × 75 = 675mm?

Sounds about right, the M3 is quite a bit longer.

I got a couple of spare 75mm barrels to cut down from Nick when I made an order, I just wanted to make sure I was on the right track before I cut them down

Re: Have I got this right?
The' multiples you mention, Mick make up the 'Calibre' (length) of the barrel. Your query, though, reminds me that I've never compared the scale length of the Firefly barrel, I've had for years, with the real deal.
Must check it out sometime.

Hi Roy. Trouble is knowing how much of the calibre length is within the turret and mantlet. A side on picture of the whole tank can help with measuring the length of visible barrel, by scaling the picture, but I don't think there are reliable measurements for that to go by. I was going to put my trust in Nick with his 75mm barrel length and deduct a 16th of 675mm, but 42mm seems an awful lot to remove.43rdRecceReg wrote:The' multiples you mention, Mick make up the 'Calibre' (length) of the barrel. Re: Have I got this right?
When barrel length is expressed in calibres, that should give the distance from muzzle to breech

Yes, but not including the length the casing fitssilversurfer1947 wrote:When barrel length is expressed in calibres, that should give the distance from muzzle to breech

Re: Have I got this right?
One option might be to compare the relative lengths by using the Blueprints website. This is how I got some of the dimensions I needed for the Comet project. Once you know the actual length of the Sherman type you're interested in, scale it down to 1/16 and use a ruler against the computer screen, as I did. Put another way, using the 'view option' scale the blueprint image up to the same length as the Model, using the ruler, and then take the measurements you need- or, print it out, and do the same.Son of a gun-ner wrote:Hi Roy. Re: Have I got this right?
Thanks Roy, I have taken a look at that site in the past, but the pictures I looked at were devoid of measurements, and I sort of dismissed the site into past memories
But now I've learnt a few measurements over time, I should have revisited that site and worked out the unknowns I needed. Oh, the price of getting old lol.
