NiMh battery life

Post by jcole134 »

Hello. I've noticed that I get around 10 minutes of battery life using the 2000Mah NiMh battery that came with my Taigen Panther or IS-2 tanks. I wanted to know if that's about normal? I have got a 5000Mah on order.

It sounds about right. Get yourself a li-ion battery pack and the tank will run for about 40 minutes.

I'm unsure about that because it's not recommended by both Torro and taigen for there setups. (I'm a newbie) Makes me think that going Lipo would also require me to change out the MFU etc to allow for the potential damage a LIPO could cause due to how it depletes compared to a NiMH.

Good read that is. And I did say li-ion for a reason. Lipo is the dangerous one. Although I have loads of them at home.

I do have a Keenstone C1-xr charger/discharger that I purchased recently when I bought the 5000Mah because the chargers that come with the Tanks are a bit pants lol. I'm also right now watching a LIPO vide from Taigen lol and yes you did say Li-ion which are much safer. The video and the guide above that @rad_schuhart posted are very useful. What capacity Li-ion gets you 40 minutes approx if you don't mind me asking?

My tank runs on 5000MAh lipo. Not the best quality I’m sure. But a full charge can last that much in a 7.6kg Tiger. I’m thinking about liion in my R/C cars. Have even ordered some to build a battery.

My other tank runs on the stock HL “super liion” battery as they call it. The capacity there is mere 1500MAh. Still it can do half an hour or so. I have a nimh battery that can move the tank about 10 seconds.

I have to update my battery entry a bit, adding those bigger LiIons and some more things, including this:

As a rule of thumb, in a tamiya tank with stock 380 motor I get about an hour of running time for every 1.000mah, with random use of smoke machine.

That stock HL battery is operated by the gold label MFU from the series before version 6.x. It does seem to have some safeguards for low voltage but I’m not sure how good they are. So for a lipo I would be hesitant to hook it up with stock MFUs.
