mato metal tracks for the HL sherman

Post by AshMann »

Hello, i was wondering if anyone has used the Mato metal tracks on an HL sherman and had any issues? the HL tank i got a few months ago came with metal tracks, sprockets and idler wheels but i couldnt get the whole thing to work as one of the sprockets kept splitting itself apart. I switched to plastic tracks and sprockets but i really need the weight of the metal tracks for traction and i have steel gearboxes so i might as well use the metal tracks. Has anyone had any issues similar to mine?

Hi,
I’ve got the HL and the Mato Sherman M4’s the mato sprockets are wider so the HL ones won’t fit. I did try but no luck. I think the HL tracks are much better IMOA. I must admit it could be the other way around I’ll have to check them both. Hope this helps. Brian...

I am aware of the width difference, as i compared the HL sprockets to the Mato sprockets, so i assumed they weren't compatible at all. Like, i couldn't put the plastic tracks on the metal mato sprockets if i wanted to

Good afternoon,
If using MATO metal tracks, you will want to swap the Sprockets to the Mato set made to fit the HL Gearboxes. Also, since the HL road wheels are a little narrower than the MATO road wheels, some swaps might be carried out there, (not a major issue). Lastly, the HL Idlers need to be modded to be wider as well so as not to have the MATO tracks wander when going over the idlers. I did this years ago on the 'Maxine' build. The idlers were the last thing I changed out with the assistance of Sass from the Forum.

The thing is, i bought my tank from mato mart, in a set that came with the tank and the all the metal tracks and stuff. I assumed that the sprockets *were* the ones made to fit the HL gearboxes.

Ashmann,
Never assume anything with two tanks so similar yet from different manufacturers. MATO had a plastic Sherman out before HL did and a lot of the accessories made up in metal followed that tanks specs instead of the HL. It took a little bit before MATO even offered the metal sprocket set to fit the HL style sprocket shaft.
regards and good luck,
Painless

Forgebear sells these. They came already fitted on a couple of my Heng Long Shermans. And run fine with standard heng long road wheels.

Well, my offer stands, if you'd like to swap tracks, sprockets, sprocket screws and idlers, I'll be happy to do that, that way I know you'll be getting a set that works.
And I'll be happy to tinker with your running gear to get to the bottom of the problem. We already know it wasn't the gearboxes that were at fault.

If anything, the gearboxes had their own small issue. One of the sprockets sits too far out compared to the other one
