Opel Blitz late war

Post by midlife306 »

Here’s a little something I’m working on at the moment. The model was a proper random find, it’s a lovely model but it’s in one piece, so I’m having to do lots of cutting to get to the individual parts.
It’s a late war wooden cabin Holtzgas Opel Blitz.

Here’s how far along I amImage

Essentially its the same principle as the old gas ovens of yesteryear - you 'burn' the wood in a low oxygen environment to liberate carbon monoxide, and then combust that gas like you would any other carbon based fuel source. Looking at Wayne's diagram, I'm guessing the cooler and filter is there to remove impurities like water or solid carbon particulate.

You don't see it used much after WW2, largely because of 2 reasons: 1) Its horribly inefficient interms of fuel (wood) vs useful output (engine output), and 2) the whole aparatus is quite heavy and takes a large bite out of the usable payload of the vehicle.

I still think that cab is the perfect opportunity for you have a crack at the wood filament. Remember all those crates I printed? I used a larger nozzle (0.6mm) and ran 30mm per second for print speed. Works great, and I bet you could just give it a wash and it would be perfect and you'd be able to tell it's wood, not disguised to look like wood.

Hi Wayne, how do you smooth that grain?
Just sand it?

Its looking great so far, but with smooth surfaces will be better.

Thanks for the explanation Martin

I may just give the wood filament a blast next time round Gary

Rad, the model dictates how good you can get the surface, circles on intricate objects tend to be made out of lots of flats, or spherical objects out of lots of triangles, to clean things up I initially file off the high spots, followed by aluminium oxide paper & finished off with wet& dry, used dry
