Ir led range and beam width when fitted into the AL tube

How accurate do you need to be aiming at another tank? Would low power lasers work , and be more accurate. Wondering why the Elmod battle unit is not recommended as it takes lots of hits. i see the Tamiya one has shielding around the battle unit. So how wide is the ir beam . Another question , why does no one make a shield for the Elmod.
