Splicing wires

Hi Guys,
I'm just preparing myself for an install of an RCCommand Battle system. There's only one last aspect that I would like to discuss with you all. It has been said by Bubbajoe, a worthy and multi-skilled contributor to this forum, that it is preferred to splice the sound card wires to the harness. Rather than hard wire them to the RX-18 board like I did. What I did was a valid option, However Bubbajoe suggested splicing the wires was a better option. Especially if I needed to change the RX-18 board in the future. I'm in agreement with "splicing" and I have got some ideas as to how I should do this efficiently in my own mind. But having said that I might be in danger of not "seeing the wood for the trees".
So here goes. What is the best way of seperating moulded multi colour electrical and shielded cable without pulling the wire core through or out of the plastic insulation. I understand that a simple cut with a sharp knife might do the trick. But sometimes you end up cutting through the insulator and revealing the wire core.
Any clues Gentlemen,
Nick,
