Splicing wires

Post by Gigantohawk »

Hi Guys,
I'm just preparing myself for an install of an RCCommand Battle system. There's only one last aspect that I would like to discuss with you all. It has been said by Bubbajoe, a worthy and multi-skilled contributor to this forum, that it is preferred to splice the sound card wires to the harness. Rather than hard wire them to the RX-18 board like I did. What I did was a valid option, However Bubbajoe suggested splicing the wires was a better option. Especially if I needed to change the RX-18 board in the future. I'm in agreement with "splicing" and I have got some ideas as to how I should do this efficiently in my own mind. But having said that I might be in danger of not "seeing the wood for the trees".
So here goes. What is the best way of seperating moulded multi colour electrical and shielded cable without pulling the wire core through or out of the plastic insulation. I understand that a simple cut with a sharp knife might do the trick. But sometimes you end up cutting through the insulator and revealing the wire core.

Any clues Gentlemen,

Try computer networking suppliers for a suitable wire stripper? Your problem is basically the same as somebody who installs CAT5 network cable - they have to strip the outer cover off in order to to make connections.

Ex-pat,
I'm ok with stripping insulation from single wires.
It's alway difficult to convey what is in my mind and describe it in a way that is meaningful to others. It's a bit like talking to someone on telephone and describing how they build a cube out of cardboard sheet and a sharp knife. So let me describe this better. Let's say we have a 3 seperate core cable with three different coloured plastic insulation. For colours let's say Yellow, Green and Blue. If I wanted to tap into the Blue wire for example what do you thing is the best way a hobbyist could do this in an effective way ?

All of the above is said with the greatest respect to you and I always appreciate your input. However I suppose I wanted a quick fix without resorting to specialised equipment. And remember my attention span is at best only marginally better than a goldfish......Oh thats a nice castle...Hmmm thats a nice pirate ship....Errr what's a tank.

Best regards mate,

Hi Nick When it comes to joining wire I usually cut it(where its best for me to join it) strip back both ends about 4mm and tin the ends slip on some shrink wrap then solder to gether the 3 wires 2 on one side give it a good tug to make sure its firm then pull the srink wrap over and heat it .

I'm with you there Pete on the single strand and thanks for the help. It's more the multi-strand I'm struggling with and the problem is...seperating the coloured insulators.
I only have enough patch leads for 2 battle systems and I have to splice 2................

Oh my god !!!!....what the hell am I talking about...I've just had a look at the wiring that I need to splice and it's not even moulded together...it's all single strand  !!!!! So I dont have a problem...

Im sorry guys you must think I'm mad..........I really need a holiday.

Nick.
