Those gear boxes run very smoothly and much quieter then standard gear boxes.
Now the fun comes installing them into my Tiger2.
Will let you know how they perform.

What I failed to mention before is, there are so many geared motors around I am positively sure one can be found that would fit the exact requirements. Preventing the need to make new parts or change existing one's.
Also I am sure the gear box shell can be made from densely layered play wood that can be glued together to any thickness needed.
Making those type of gear boxes even more simplistic and affordable.

I am no engineer, but I too have wondered why the RC tank manufacturers went down the route of reduction gearboxes rather than a simple direct ratio. The gearbox noise would be vastly reduced, and less space. Elmod used to sell some quality ones, but they were silly money.

Check out “Fast Mike tanks” on eBay, he sells the bearings, shafts & bevel gears for his gearboxes.
The gearbox frames are available from him on Thingiverse for free.

Really nice work on the gearboxes. Looks nice and solid.

Hi all,
finally with all my various gear box projects almost coming to an end I started installing them in my Tiger2
To my dismay installing the gear boxes required me to completely take the lower hull apart.Which is a nice experience but very time consuming. There are around 500 screws that hold the lower tank together.
To be able to install and remove the gear boxes with ease, it became mandatory to redesign the gear box housing.
Reducing each one by 6mm would give me an extra 12mm inside space.
There where also other modification that needed to be done too.
The geared motors I used where sold as 30 : 1 rpm. It seemed a touch slow but I thought I could use a faster motor to compensate.
Installing and testing the finished gear boxes did not satisfy. Crawling was excellent but overall speed was to slow.
I bought another set of geared motors sold as 60:1 rpm.
Finishing and testing them was another disappointment. Crawling was a bit fast so was the over all speed.
In frustration I started experimenting with my first gear box ( 30:1 ) By rearranging the gears, then ended up taking one gear out all together. To my surprise it was the best outcome yet. Good crawling speed 30 degree with ease and it speeds up nicely too.
It will be a wile before I think gear boxes again though.
