New project Krupp Raumer S

Post by midlife306 »

Hi all,
I've been looking for a decent sized project to 3d print, to be honest I feel lost now that my 1/16 LCM3 is all but finished.
I managed to find a 3d model of a Krupp Raumer S. Its a big bugger, so it should take a week or two...
The model I found is supposed to be 1/100, after checking the o/d of the wheels ive had to scale them up by 629% to get them the correct diameter for 1/16 scale. The wheels were 2.7m diameter, gulp
I'll post a pic up shortly of a wheel at size on my Slicer desktop.
Here is a pic to whet your appetites.
Cheers

As promised, here’s a 2.7m wheel at 1/16 in my Slic3r program. The bed size you can see is 220 x 220mm

A few days in & I’ve completed printing the front half, it measures 540mm long x 165mm wide at the cabin. Luckily the rear half is a carbon copy of the front so my printer is off running proven g codeImage
I can’t help thinking that strategically this thing would have been an awesome piece of kit for breaking through defences & there’s loads of room inside it, you’d think it would carry at least some form of weapon......
The biggest headache is going to be the articulation joint & making it steerable, I’ve been giving it some thought so watch this space.

I’ve ordered a couple of solid rear axles from China, looks like they should fit the bill nicely.

That thing is huge. What were they used for?

Hehe, they only built one & the Americans captured it before it could be used. It was designed to clear mines, the front wheels are a wider track than the rears to clear a wider track for the tanks, fingers crossed it should look something like this when finished...

Thanks, I’ve done the easy bit now, this is where it should start to get interesting, I’ve quite a few things on their way over from China & my Dremel is ready to go.

I'm really interested to see how you make it steer. How did the prototype do it? Was it by using the articulation joint?

A lot of it is guess work, the only pics that exist only hint at he steering mechanism, all you can really see are massive hydraulic rams, these kits give a good idea though.
Think the majority of mine will be metal though as I want it to be robust.

After an 18 hour run, I’ve just got the first wheel off the printer, it certainly puts things in perspective!
Imagine being in a dugout & this thing is hammering towards you, I’d have my Reeboks on that’s for sure!
