Best way to spoil a weekend off work

Post by tankman »

Well boy's and girl's here is one one easy way to do so. Take one lovingly repainted Stug and after adding some detail work and sealing with a layer of satin varnish ( flaming enamel ) try to add a heavy wash. Yes you got it the blasted satin varnish had not hardened enough and lifted off with the result that the wash got under the decals and collected along panel lines in a nice heavy almost GLOSS finish with the result that IT'S RUINED the paint job  :'(. Also the Matt varnish on the road wheels decided to dry to a slight satin sheen and looks awfull. So people this tail of woe comes to an end and shows us that not every story has a happy ending. The moral is do not rush to finish a model or you might end up like me sobbiong in RAGE knowing it's all your own fault and that you have to start ALL OVER AGAIN.

This thread should be deleted unless you post some pictures!  ;D

I'll stick with acrylics.  When I screw up I pull out the windex and start over.  Can you salvage it?  When I think varnish, I'm thinking thick stuff!

I know it's closing the door after the horse has bolted but.......try using Johnsons Clear floor polish in future. One coat will seal it and it goes on brilliantly and thin with an air brush. The more sheen you want, the more coats you add........"simples", as a meerkat once said. Dries very qickly too!

Cheer's Brian, once I strip the enamel paint off the Stug I will try the Johnsons floor polish. I have seen it used by modelers before but never tried it myself. The thing I normally do is add my varnish to the paint mix prior to spraying. This time I took a chance and sprayed straight paint hoping to get the finish afterwards. Won't make that mistake again !!!

I totaly sympathise with you :'( Ive had it where ive spent weeks on static aircraft, doing all the interiors, figures, decals..and then the last blooming coat of varnish reacts and bubbles! Very sorry for you. Regards, Luke.
