Soviet Storm-WW2 in the East on DVD
The 12 short films contained in this box set were made for Russian TV consumption, in 2011. Then they were shown on the History Channel, apparently. But I bought the box set recently from Amazon for around £14, and think it was money well spent. There's quite a lot of WW2 footage that hasn't appeared in the West before (since it's from Russian archives), together with some nicely executed CGI battle reconstructions and even authentic looking re-enactments. At over 925 mins running time, it's perfect for an extended weekend DVD binge for WW2 couch potatoes. Not surprisingly, there's a touch of propaganda driving it; but it's not excessive- and considering the price the Russians paid in the war- perfectly understandable. Of course, there are oodles of tank action in CGI (good quality) and archive footage, and absolutely no guest appearance nor epic commentary by Vlad the Putin....

Looks like a worthwhile find Roy, nice to see something other than the US-centric view of the war so much popular media portrays.
There's been a noticeable nationalistic resurgence in Russian culture/news/media lately, particularly given the recent tension with the West. It would not surprise me if this kind of thing were bankrolled (and subsequently a little bit skewed) by big Daddy Vladdy et al.43rdRecceReg wrote:Not surprisingly, there's a touch of propaganda driving it; but it's not excessive- and considering the price the Russians paid in the war- perfectly understandable. Yes, Ram, and this collection- with pin-sharp graphics- represents a refreshing change from the predictable, and hackneyed footage we get here in the West: clips and footage that reappear regularly on WW2 collections, and mash-ups. Clips that are grainy and worn out, as if they've been transferred from obsolete VHS machines...
