Alternative Gearboxes

Post by Mackem »

Hi All

I will be starting the mechanical and RC upgrade of my Abrams shortly and need some info on gearboxes.
The Abrams rear hull isn't as high as the Leo's so it won't accept standard hl gearboxes.
Ideally the height of the replacement gearboxes including the motors should not exceed 6cm.
Also they will need to accept HL Pershing drive sprockets.
Any info, suggestions, vendors names would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
John

These might suit your purpose John. I haven't used them personally but I know a few people on this forum have.

Cheers Grompix,

Have had a look at them on ebay, the sellers name is Forgebear.
He doesn't give any dimensions but the motors are mounted level with the boxes so they should fit.
Has anyone got these?

Yep fitted them in my T34 and tiger not sure if you'll get them to fit the pershing sprockets as the shafts for those are longer than the tiger ::)
for the T34 all i did was replace the original shaft with my own

and thinking on you might be able to fit H/long pershing shafts into the low profile Stug boxes ;) ;)

Mackem the gearboxes in the new stugIII may be O.K they are low will post Photo later they  are a standard heng long left gearbox and the right one is modified so the motor is low down and further forward its a shame we cant just buy the right gearbox.

Thanks for all the info lads.
Looks like it will be HL low profile boxes then. Will be placing an order soon militarymight.

RE: Changing the drive sprocket shafts.
I was thinking I would have to use Pershing/Bulldog gearboxes on my leo conversion.
Anyway, I tried fitting the Pershing drive sprockets to a spare pair of standard PZIII gearboxes and they are a perfect fit.
So my leo has pershing drive sprockets fitted to standard PZIII boxes.  8)

Hi Rob,

Guess I was just lucky then. The clearance between the drive sprockets and the hull is spot on.
Not often that happens in the conversion game eh!!  ;D ;D ;D
