I have purchased a couple of Visaton FR7 speakers, to replace the stock Heng Long/Taigen speakers in a couple of tanks. I am proposing to make boxes for them from plasticard. Are there recommended dimensions and does it make any difference to the sound with a larger box? Last question, should the box be filled with wadding, or just left empty?

Ideally the larger the box the better but you'll always be limited with a tank. So next the box can be ported or sealed. If sealed the back pressure restricts the sound at high volumes but has good control and the negative sound wave will effect the sound so sound proofing is recommended.

For ported I'm struggling to find the ideal solution. Same issue as before with back pressure but this escapes down the port but the port has to be the correct dimensions otherwise it will cancel out the sound wave rather than add to it which is what your trying to achieve. I'm still researching but a rule of thumb is it should be 5 times the diameter of the speaker so your speaker at 60mm would need a 300mm long port which is hard to hide in a tank.

I'm currently experimenting with sealed boxes for visaton speakers I sell but it's slow going.

I like sealing airtight and using wadding. Though I really like the slightly larger FRS 8 speaker and have fitted it in Panther, Tiger and KT.
It has a deeper more rich sound with more bass to my ear!

I've never come across wadding in speaker boxes before. What do you guys use and how much do you put in there?

There is a very detailed science to speaker construction..but for these purposes I just try things and see..er listen..to what works best. I added wadding which I used with cotton but not sure I could tell with and without here.

I follow the same principal as tao,i make boxes out of plastic sheet and give them a go.
If you look at my kv1 and panther thread in the heng long build section you will see some speaker boxes i made to fit the available space.
This is one i've just made for a tamiya tiger,it has an fr8 and an fr7 in it.

Richard, or if your feeling a bit lazy, rctankde sell Visaton speakers already boxed and wired up to go with correct 2 pin plug, if my memory serves me correct they have 3 different sizes, but you obviously have to pay more for these.
