Another kitbash

Post by tankman »

Hi Guy's another kitbash in progress. I am building a matamlong ( Matorro, Tamiya, Heng Long hybrid ) King Tiger. The upper body is the Matorro King Tiger with a Tamiya tub ( £15 from ebay ), new suspension and running gear ( a bit more from Welsh Dragon ;D ) . I will be using Tamiya electronics from my Tam Tiger 1 to power the old girl  and the gearboxs will be the Asiatam 3:1 unit's. All I have got to do now is get a set of axle's for the wheels and bearings instead of the sloppy brass bushings. Should give me a very smooth ride. I have made the rear idlers solid by filling the drums with Milliput and inserting the idler arms in while still wet and then allowing it to set. Can't take any credit for that idea as I got it off the  "other " forum and it seems to work well. I hope to upgrade the suspension at a later date but will keep the stock Tam stuff for now. Just have to mount the gearboxes and raise the front wheels 3mm. A couple of pictures to be going on with. All the best for now

Hi Pete the upper deck is a drop on fit ( the tub is the older 1980's one ) and even has the 2 holes to screw to the mounting bracket. the rear pannel will need some modification to mount but not that much. There will be more pictures when I have done this bit. All the best for now

I had ask Bill at Rc Command if he was going to get metal lower hull kit for the matorro KT they have a replacement barrel assy there with recoil he said not shore but would check on it  but still could do the Tamiya lower hull .  :D :D. Rc Command is getting the Asiatam P3 lower hull kit there Tiger 1 lower hull is from there .

To be honest Grompix beat me to it with his H/L Tamiya hybrid build. That's what inspired me to pull my finger out  ;D. Also realised it's the only way I can afford a half decent KT at the moment ( and I had a lot of the [glow=red,2,300]expensive[/glow] parts anyway ). Best of luck with your build and look forward to seeing the build thread. All the best for now

I think Hybrids are a good way to go at the moment especially in these cash-hungry days.
Great start on your King Tiger Alan.
Keep the pics coming.

Cheers

Hi Guy's some pictures as promised. So far I have fitted the rear pannel with some small modifications. Used styrene to make a solid fixing point for the lower tub screw. Made some styrene mounting points for the wing's that come off the hull. Also added some alloy angle ( from B&Q ) to close the gap between the older style Tamiya hull and body. I will have to add some strips of styrene to fully close everything up. Motors mounted on a scrap bit of alloy from a failed project. Motors have been broken in then stripped and shimmed out where needed so they run nice and smooth with very little slopping round on the drivetrain. I have temporaraly put the Matorro wheels back on just to test the ride height. In my opinion I need to adjust the ride hight down a little. The only word of warning about using HL gearboxes for this upgrade is the increase in drive sprocket height it's about 4mm to 5mm which is a touch to high, 3mm would be great however the drive shaft height on the HL box plus the mounting plate thickeness gives you the extra height. Not sure if the Asaitam low profile gearboxes drive shafts are mounted lower ( Can anyone provide me with a measurement between the base of the gearbox and the top of the output shaft ). As always comments and observations welcome. All the best for now
