Hi from Essex

Post by Nightrider »

Hi there
My name is Ben and I am new to rc tanks but want to get in to them at the mo I own none I have looked around though and like the kv1 and the panther tiger and King tiger Sherman then there is the jagpanther and so many others

In the past I have owed rc cars tamiya rough rider and such lunch box hornet but that was 20 odd yeas ago so I'm quite a noob to the new style of electrics that the tanks use that said I do know computers so it cannot be that hard
One question I have though is what brand to get taigen or henglong which to my eyes look basically the same but you probably know better
What I am looking for is quality of build good sound and metal parts for a price that won't break the bank obviously that's what most people want though.
Any ideas brands where to buy and what to avoid would be great.
Cheers Ben.

Hi Ben,
Another Essex boy that's good  welcome to the forum. There's a lot of guys with a wealth of information don't be scared of asking any type of question there's always someone with an answer. I would say that Taigen are slightly better but Heng Long have improved of late. So it's a case of you pays your money you take your choice :lolno:. But do check the black list vendors and the preferred vendors. This could save you money in the long run. Brian...

Ben, You are looking too far ahead and the mists of enthusiasm are clouding something much more important,
THE DEALER!!!
Before you start spending any money you really must make sure that whoever you buy your Tank/s from will not sell you rubbish/old stock or just plain old fashioned CHEAT you,
Go to Forums,
Click,
Scroll down to the "BLACKLIST"
Read it and you will notice names that are well known to you, If they are on the list then I beg you to be very careful,,
We have the very good fortune that within our Forum are members who are dealers and they are trustworthy, You should start with looking through the "Recommended Vendors",
The quality of any particular makers products are to some of us irrelevant because as soon as we get it we rip it apart and rebuild it with those upgrades we think worthwhile, but time and hands on experience as well as reading all the entries on the Forum can make or break a good build so ASK QUESTIONS, :haha:
Heng Long for some time had a poor name for quality, primarily because their products were marketed as toys,
that is no longer true, the latest electronics package is light years away from those Tanks,
Taigen and Torro try to give the impression that their Tanks are more superior when in truth apart from a quality paintjob are usually not in my opinion worth the extra £200 plus and then of course there is the holy grail of Tanks,
TAMIYA,
unlike the others you have to build a Tamiya Tank yourself (Which is not difficult) whereas the others are ready to run. Have a look at the various builds to get an idea of what can be achieved but I fear this is a hobby that will cost you most of your time and a fortune as well as your children's inheritance. :lolno:
Oh and welcome to the Forum,
Shaun.
I think I am about to upset someone :haha:

Welcome to the forum, Ebay used to be a great place to buy used HL and Tamiya tanks, but they are now not so plentiful, and the prices have gone up. Sure, buying new is good, but don't forget that car boot sales can turn up £10-£20 bargains.

Don't get too hung up on the metal thing. There is nothing wrong with plastic tanks and plastic tracks, and metal and plastic look the same when they are painted anyway?

The only upgrades I would save my money for are decent electrics if you want realistic sound, and steel (not white metal) gearboxes. Considering that those two items will set you back £150-£200 it makes sense to get hold of a cheap non-working tank and do a bit of work on it to get it how you want it.

Cheers all
Thanks for the advice
Boot sales I have never seen a tank at the booty only cars and taigen seems to have the edge for me over henglong and tamiya is too expensive Evan though I enjoy the build as much as the play and metal rules in my book heavy metal lol and it does seem to be a time consuming expensive new hobby that I like the look of.
Cheers Ben.

Welcome to the most addictive hobby on the planet, I'm a relative newbie 11 months in with 18 tanks already , A few pointers for you,
1. Sit down and give it some thought how much you want to spend on a tank, and weather you want to upgrade it yourself or if not some company's of a standard version and ones already upgraded with better Gearboxs and tracks etc.
2. Find a supplier who has great recommended ( FORGEBEAR) Dave on here ,as this is a must, as there's a black list on here of suppliers with a fair few on it to avoid.
3.Dont be afraid to ask questions there is a sea of knowledge on this site, and if not theres plenty of people with knowledge enough to help you out even of the most stickiest situation .
4.Above all enjoy, and build your tank how you want it weather it's pink or is as accurate as the real things was. Good luck and happy spending.Andy
