Sherman (sort of) Firefly

Post by hobo_keith »

Hello,

I keep looking at all the great tanks on here so thought I'd share my attempt. The commander (which I bought from Frankie on here) is a great figure and I had fun painting him. I know that the tank is far from being a correct Firefly, so I'm in the middle of sorting the hatches and whatnot to get it a bit closer at least... I'll post my efforts soon. Thanks for looking.

Good afternoon,
I love a good Sherman and it looks like you had a lot of fun building this one. The time spent is evident in the paint and detailing. Well done!
regards,
Painless

A very nice Sherman but there again I love Sherman tanks, great paintwork and nice detailing and the stowage is just right.

Thank you all, that’s very gratifying to hear from such skilled modellers. It’s still early days for my tanking, and to be honest I didn’t know that Shermans featured so many variations and detail changes - but now I do, and it’s given me lots more to work on! The tank was a bit of an ebay bargain, so it’s got a few bits and bobs missing which I’ll gradually add. It’s on 27 mhz so I’d like to add after-market electronics as I’ve actually got some Spektrum radio gear. I’ve also realised I’ve accumulated almost enough spare parts over the year to start building an entire new Sherman. This is how it starts, isn’t it? Again, thanks for all the encouragement and kind words.
cheers, Keith

Hi all,

Just a follow up in the form of some pics of the Sherman, now slightly closer with the front hatches. Still the wrong angle on the front and a few other iffy bits but it's a proper low-budget affair and I'll keep going. I've had fun doing it though, which is th main thing, and this forum is a boon. Didn't quite realise how different the green was on the gearbox cover, but without the stowage (to be reinstated) and under that afternoon sun it's miles out. Hope you like it anyway. Cheers, Keith

Great job Kieth! The small hatches really improve the overall look. Good work!

Hey Tom - thanks very much indeed, most appreciate it. Going to start on that lovely Tamiya M4 soon, so I thought I'd best try to learn how to use an airbrush a bit first... It's a bit blotchy, although some of this might be water from putting decals on. That said the turret's the worse - and that's a painted marking so, errr, I might just have to put it down to the bright light showing my dodgy paint.
Anyway, onwards an upwards. I seem to have accrued a few spares too, and they seem to be turning into a tank. Anyway, it looks as though I rather like Shermans!
cheers, Keith

Hello Doc,

Thank you for the kind words! I was wondering about that myself, I agree that it still looks a bit fresh of the landing craft so I probably should weather it at some point. I think it being my first shot at a big 1/16 tank is giving me pause, but maybe I should bite the 17pdr AP round and go for it. cheers, Keith
