Which is the best Motor&gearbox combination

Post by 971wright »

Hi Guys Thought I would start this off with All my tanks are running Heng Long electrics with Darkiths battle system ,I have just tried speed 400 6v motors with a 100:1 gearboxes in a Sherman Had fantastic torque and the speed was about right for off road even if the top speed was down .Big problem it only ran for 15mins with a 3700mah battery not good .So changed gear ratio to 80:1 put blackcap motors in result 40min still lots of  torque and speed is very slightly faster.
Conclusion is dont use speed 400 6v motors ,have used speed 400 7,2v in a panzer 3 and it will run for over an hour with 3400mah battery so the only speed 400 motor to use is 7,2 v wont even try the 4,6v this draws more power than the 6 v motor .
Which motor&gearbox combination do you use and what are the run times, and which power system tring to find the best combination if enough of you reply we could get a better idea of the best set up .Have just read that el-mod eats batteries .
The set up I would like to get is something that lasts at least 45min to an hour and has enough torque to get out of trouble and climb a good 30 degree slope.

All I can say is that I have run Graupner 400's in my Bulldog with the standard gearboxes, and the thing will climb anything. It crawls over the local grass and gravel bmx circuit with ease and I haven't found a natural gradient it won't climb. A 3400 battery will last an hour, it runs a Darkith unit too, and metal tracks, sprockets, and gearboxes.

Hi wibbly This sounds like my Panzer 3 full metal tracks suspension ,standard gearboxes speed 400 7,2 It may be a little fast but it runs and runs even if bits fall off it runs .When it has taken a few hits it slows but still able to move it .
Have a Tiger 1 with speed 400 7,2 3:1 gearboxes runs for ages but after a couple of hits it wont move just end up turning the turret and hoping someone will kill it so I can move again.
Panzer 4 runs well on standard motors and gears but havnt had this one outside yet ran it at Nottingham with good running time a little fast untill hit a couple of times .
Both Panzer 3&4 could do with a reduction in gearing but they dont need 3:1 gearboxes if it would be posible to fit(find) 8 tooth pinions they would be about right .Does anyone Know where they can be bought and what is the pitch of the gears .

I have some 9 tooth pinions, but I am awaiting delivery of a pinion puller. I will see whether they go straight on and what the effect is within a few days hopefully.

in my tiger 1 i have the metal boxs with black cap motors and the full elmod 6 prop install with a ansmann 3300 mha battery, and outside in the garden on grass and dirt i get about 25 to 30 minutes run time, which seems good for elmod

Hi Ice From what has been posted about el-mod this seems to be very good, is it the new one or the old one .I think it may be that the blackcap motors dont use alot of power and this could be one reason you get a good run time. The thing is dose it run at scale speed and are you happy with it ,could always add another battery to get it to an hour .
The problem is with smaller tanks  there isnt room to get two batteries in would struggle to get two in a sherman and a Panzer 3 or 4 .

hi pete, yes it is the old elmod set up and and it does run at scale speed, i had bought 3.1 reduction boxs for it but with the old elmod set up it would of been to slow, the new elmod boards take into account the 3.1 boxs and still run at scale speed. as i have the full elmod set up ive stripped the hull so ive junked the battery tray , so i could fit another battery if needed , i have the same set up in my pershing but havent run the motors or gearboxs in yet so i only get 10 miutes run time out of it
all the best, ice
