M36B1 attempt

Post by wibblywobbly »

I am only doing this because someone gave me a Mato lower hull and said 'do what you want with it'.

I pondered awhile and then thought, hmmm, I wonder. Now from the outset I will say that I know nothing much about Shermans, so before the rivet counters all jump in, if there are any glaring inaccuracies then its because this will be a cheap and cheerful build, rather than a museum piece. The turret is going to take a while to do, either that or I shell out for an NA resin one, which may be my only option if a DIY doesn't work. The sides look almost Walker Bulldog-ish, so I may cannibalise one.

I got the lower for free, and the Heng Long upper from Germany. My German language skills are zero, so although the pic showed an upper with the turret on, it didn't have one when it got here, so I am assuming it said 'turret not included' somewhere. :{ It's not a problem, I don't need it anyway.

Ok, here's some pics.
Modified the transmission cover to make the front look right.
Modified the idler mounts so that they are straight.
Installed some rails inside the upper hull so that it sits at the right height on the lower.
Modified the steel valance at the front so that the bolt heads look more in line with the lower hull.

Rob, looks good so far. If you do end up having to buy a turret, Daves able to get the metal ones and they're much cheaper than the resin kit.

I didn't know he could get them, thanks for the info Tom, if they are cheap it will save me a lot of time making something that wouldn't be accurate.

Taking a plunge on the Mato turret, I started designing one in CAD to 3D print it, but the rear is a load of curves that just won't look right unless they are spot on. Dave is doing a good deal so I would be daft not to get one ready made.

A quick pic of the sanded filler on the hull, it all looks nice and tidy now.

I am intending to fit metal suspension, and detailed Schumo bits if I can get them, it will actually be a very quick build at this rate.

Still waiting for the slow boat from China, though I did manage to source a complete HL toolkit so they go straight into the existing holes. Will get the Mato metal travel lock as this is a different shape to the Sherman one, and has to go on the rear engine deck. The only parts that I haven't yet found are the front and rear lifting loops and the track holders for the rear panel, if anyone knows where I can get some feel free to let me know.

Electrics I am still pondering. If the elevation and recoil are servo operated then I need a board that has two servo functionality. If I forego the elevation (not needed for indoor flat floor battles) then the Clark board will do the job. Cheapest option, basic programming options, and easiest to fit as it is the same size as an RX18. The other option for Grade A sounds and programmability is to buy another Elmod Fusion Eco, but that would cost me more than the tank cost to build?

A quick demo of the difference in sound:

Elmod, Needs to be M26 Pershing sounds as the M36 used the Ford GAA V-8 same as M4A3

I was thinking about the weight of a metal turret on the HL/Mato hull, and discovered something that I hadn't noticed before. Even with the standard plastic suspension units the design means that they operate unlike the suspension on other tanks. I can apply pressure to the top of the hull as hard as I like but the suspension does not compress at all. Yet, just runniing a finger along the underside of the tracks, the suspension is compliant. This may be why Shermans always run so well?

The upside of this is that no matter how much the metal turret weighs, it will have no effect on the suspension (though I will fit metal units just to get the rubber tyres). This should work out as being a pretty cheap and well put together TD, and very easy to do.
