Tamiya / Heng-Long PzIV Hybrid

Post by grompix »

Hi Folks.

I've decided on my next project. Hopefully it will be easier than scratch-building that Ausf 'A' Panther
(maybe I shouldn't have said that!).

I really would like a Tamiya PzKw IV Ausf J. Particularly as the new MF05 has that very tasty Maybach HL-120 TRM sound digitally recorded from an actual Panzer IV at the Panzermuseum in Munster, Germany.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsTwv5RZQrY" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The last time I looked, the cheapest I could find the PzKw IV Tamiya kit was £530 on Ebay. Of course I would
want metal tracks and swap the Tamiya gearboxes with HL 3-1 metal gears. That would bring it up to over
£600!!! And that's without adding P&P charges, RC Gear or TBU. No way am I paying that much for a Tamiya kit even if I could afford it!  :o :o :o

I do have a Heng Long Panzer IV F1 though. The tank is not bad as far as accuracy is concerned and the mods needed to bring it up to scratch are not too complicated (I think I experienced a touch of deja-vu just then!).

I wondered what would it take to bring a HL PzIV up as close to Tamiya standard as possible. So I worked out
some costs :-

Tamiya Panzer IV Ausf J Kit:-

Tamiya Panzer IV J £530.00
Metal Tracks £39.00
HL 3-1 Gearboxes £31.00
Total £600 without P&P charges, RC Gear or TBU

HL Panzer IV with Tamiya parts and Tamiya electronics:-

HL Panzer IV £49.00
Metal Tool Kit £10.00
Tamiya PzIV G Parts £16.00
Tamiya PzIV D Parts £20.00
Tamiya PzIV C Parts £19.50
HL 3-1 Gearboxes             £31-00
Asiatam Gun Recoil             £31-50
DMD Multifunction MF05       £96-00
DMD T03 £86-00
Metal Tracks & Sprockets             £39.00

Total £398 without P&P charges, RC Gear or TBU

HL Panzer IV with Tamiya parts and Elmod electronics:-

HL Panzer IV £49.00
Metal Tool Kit £10.00
Tamiya PzIV G Parts £16.00
Tamiya PzIV D Parts £20.00
Tamiya PzIV C Parts £19.50
HL 3-1 Gearboxes              £31-00
Asiatam Gun Recoil              £31-50
Elmod ThinkTank Module £98-00
Elmod Blaster III              £89-20
Metal Tracks & Sprockets              £39.00

Total £403 without P&P charges, RC Gear, CSI or Configurator

I elected to buy the turret sprues from Axels Modellbau Shop. I could have got away with just the 'D' parts
to replace the inaccurate HL gun mantle and rommelkist. But I decided to be greedy and factored in cost of
the other two sprues for the turret schurtzen, late cupola and 80mm front plate as well.

As you can see, using Tamiya spare parts on a Heng Long Panzer IV works out at £398 - over £200 cheaper than the Tamiya PzIV kit. Using Elmod parts works out slightly more expensive. Even so, this is the route I would have normally taken but in the light of comments on the new Elmod systems, I've decided to go for the Tamiya parts instead this time.

All the parts have now arrived so now I'm ready to start the build. I'll post pictures of its progress.

Cheers
Chris  :D

you have to be commended on a well thought out project, interesting to see that the elmod parts cost as much if not more than the Tamiya parts

Hi Chris Dont fit the asiatam recoil unit there not that good, fit the heng long one its half the price and better in my opinion. Have 2 asiatam units and both give me nothing but trouble, thinking of changing both my asiatam units for the Heng long and binning the asiatam.

I used Grompix price list for the parts, you could also use the Tamiya gun recoil

ahh but if you do pete or YHR's hl gun re-coil mod its more realistic than the tamiya because it springs back then powers forward, whereas the tamiya is one smooth motion,

thanks,

Hi Folks
The apparent careful preparation for this build is an accidental one-off I'm afraid. I can't take any credit for it. I was too involved with my Panther 'A' scratch build to bother about opening the parcels arriving for the PZIV. I knew if I opened just one of those parcels, the Panther would likely to be shoved aside and this one started. I'm fickle that way, that's why I have so many unfinished projects lying around LOL.  :haha:

Don't worry Matt, I'll soon get back to my disorganised ways!  ;)

I'm curious to see how the Tamiya Panzer works out scale and size-wise to the HL PzIV. After all, Heng Long brought their PZIV before Tamiya. I wonder if Tamiya copied any HL parts?

The suspension bogies on my HL PZIV are already metal Matt (although I think I read somewhere that the new ones are plastic). I wouldn't mind metal wheels with rubber tyres (as is available for the HL PZIII) but I don't think anyone does them yet. In any case having metal suspension and plastic wheels is not too dissimilar to Tamiya so it makes for a reasonable comparison.

I know you have had unfortunate experiences with the Asiatam recoil units Pete but (at the risk of tempting fate) I've never had any bother with them. I've got two tanks fitted with the asiatam units and they both work a treat. I will admit though that they are more than a tad fragile so you may have had the ill luck to get a bad batch. The only gripe I've had with them is their limited elevation arc so I might end up following your advice anyway Pete LOL  :/ .

I didn't include the IR combat systems in any of the comparisons Mart as they vary so much in cost. Tamiya's TBU currently works out at around £50-£70 or so depending on where you look. You can use the Darkith DBU module instead of the TBU and that is about £10-15 in kit form. But you need to know what you are doing to interface it with the Tamiya MFU.

The Elmod system is about £63. You need the CSI PCB too so you can't just stick on a DBU as you can with the Tamiya.

In the end I thought it would be simpler to just ignore the IR combat system and then people could just factor in their personal preference as they wish.

I've started the build now and it's working out quite well (touch wood). Pictures coming soon.

Cheers
Chris  :D

me too  ;)
this is going to be a good build

one thing that is a shame is that no one makes an elmod style bolt on sound board with upgradeable sounds to replace the mf unit and utilize the dmd for drive (or do they?) would the benedini sound system work on the dmd?
