Hi Guys, this is a video showing a side by side comparison of 1/16 and 1/18 Jeeps, and I made this for Rad_Schuhart, because he recently told me he wants to try and RC a 1/18 jeep. Don't get me wrong, Rad, I think it will be really cool if you can pull it off, I just want you to have as much info as you can get before starting the project. If it was me I think I'd get that 1/18 jeep you sent me a link for but just use it as a static background piece, and then find a 1/16 to RC. But that's me, and like I said, it will be really cool if you pull it off, and it might even make things easier for me when I do a jeep in 1/16. I mean, if you RC a 1/18 and tell me the stuff you used it should fit in a larger 1/16 jeep even easier. Sounds logical, anyway.

The reason I didn't just send the video to Rad in a PM is that I thought it would be a good chance to get some info on Jeeps in general. So who knows what? Does anyone actually have an RC Jeep? Can I see it, please? Photos are great, but video is even better.

I'm planning to RC the Jeep in this video, so can anyone give me a head start on the research and recommend any good threads or websites where I can gain useful info? I'll do a lot of searching on my own so I'm not just being lazy, it's just that I believe this is one of the reasons we have forums like this, to share info and give tips to save each other time, so if anyone wants to chime in that would be great. And if anyone wants to yell at me and tell me to do my own damn research that's OK, too. We all need to vent a little from time to time, eh?

That is a definitelly noticeable size difference... Of course bigger the easyer to Rc, but the best thing about the ones in aliexpress I showed you is you can have them at home for about 20 euros shipping included.

Anyway there is not too much room to fit the things inside it... Thats true. I also considering to buy a Volkswagen beetle, also im 1:18, which I think it gives us more space to fit everything inside.

Anyway sometime ago I found a thread somewhere of a really skilled guy that RCed the takom's renault ft 17 keeping all the detailed interior. If he did it with such a tiny tank, we can make it too. We can always disguise batterys and stuff like that as stowagd at the rear of the jeep.

Best way to go about it is to measure the wheelbase and try to match an existing RC offering with your wants and needs in terms of price, etc.

I used Horizon Hobby's Losi Rockcrawlers for the Kubel and Schwimm, but taking a brand new $150 RC car and hacking it to bits might not sound reasonable to everyone. I went with those because I wanted a full suspension and replaceable parts. Horizon is well known for their parts and customer service and if I was investing the time into scale working lugs, etc, I wanted it to work.
But, really, wheel base is the key first. Second is if you want 4WD, third would be suspension. If you find something, make sure it's not a solid piece, that te drive train is separable. If you find something you like, you might be able to buy just the drive train in parts.

One option for doing an rc of a jeep is to find a donor toy that about fits the dimensions e.g

Then you can chop out the steering mechanism and drive and perhaps use Woz's parts to create a working jeep. This only requires 3 AA batteries so they should fit in the back of the jeep disguised as cargo, or you may be able to use a battery for a drone as they tend to be small and powerful. It's not going to be a cross-country vehicle but it depends what you want the jeep to do. At less than £10 though the toy approach offers a try-it-and-see option. Alwyn

I'll be following this build with interest. I have one of those Indy Jones trucks that is on the list for an RC and detail as well as the 251 that I have been corresponding with Jackalope on. I know that the Jeep can be done. There is a nifty, little 1/35 scale one that was out a few years back that was RC.

And I'd really appreciate your opinion. I also have a Kubel (just stock Tamiya RC) so I can compare to that as well. I would think the distance between the insides of the tires would be pretty important, so I'll compare the jeep with the kubel to see if I can use the same crawler you used on your kubel (or possibly the one from HK). The jeep is a lot heavier than a kubel and you know the kind of roads in my village from the videos and that's where I'll mainly drive it. I don't plan on taking on grass or loose sand.

A.T., thanks very much for the jeep dimensions. Those have already been printed. I looked at the stuff you linked from Woz, but didn't see any running gear, so do you know how far along he is with that project? Don't want to bother him unless necessary. I also thought about the toy jeep idea, but I want better control than you get with most of those. I've had a lot of new bright toys for the nephews to thrash on (so they get it out of their systems before they try tanks) so I know they're pretty cool, but not real sophisticated. I figure I'll have to spend a little money to get decent drive gear and I was wondering if a jeep would be better with the pistol grip type TX? I've never used one of those. It's got a trigger for throttle and a knob for steering, correct? How many channels would one of those have? I think I heard three, but not sure. I may do lights, but I'm not worried about sound for this project. I might try to do some kind of sound in a trailer at some point in the future. I also really want to do an ambulance!

Painless, I'll try to get lots of pix and videos for you guys as i do this. Thanks for mentioning 1/35. You got me thinkin' I already have a geko board for motor control if i need it, and i think Kevin has done some stuff in 1/35 so that will be a good research resource. If they can fit it in that scale I should be able to do something, eh?

Confession time. I ordered two more Danbury Mint Jeeps. Nothing like the price I got on the first one, but both were under $100 including shipping. I have a trick for finding freshly listed stuff, but it's a really good trick so ask me in a PM if you're after specific ebay stuff.

I guess I need to start a build thread, right? That will be a first for me. I guess in "Other Builds", right? Or should I just post updates here? I didn't really intend this to become a log of the build, just a kind of resource deposit. Now I can come back here whenever i need to see photos or links or anything, so it seems like a separate thread wouldn't be necessary. Maybe a moderator can move this one? Who are the moderators, anyway? On most tank forums the moderator turns out to be an airplane guy.
