Torro M16

Post by silversurfer1947 »

Not strictly a build, so if it's in the wrong place perhaps a nice, friendly mod would move it. Pretty much straight out of the box, it's just been made a bit dirty and dusty. Some fuse wire pretending to be cable on the front reel. Lastly, it's been crewed up, with the crew suitably armed, just waiting for trouble.

It's disappointing that the ony ounds it comes with is the quad .50s letting rip. I had a look at other boards - the only one I can find is by elmod. It is specifically for this model, ut is quite pricey, about £120 at current exchange rates. That's virtually what the model cost. The questions are - are they any good and are they worth the money? The M16 operates off 9.6v and I could not find a voltage for the board, but the indication from the elmod website is that it is effectively plug and pay.

This is a sound card that The Tank Man found and it looks brilliant and is tiny

Only thing to watch for is the 5v voltage limit - you may need a voltage regulator. The engine sounds are programmable.

Got my idiot head on again this morning. I want to have a look at the electronics inside. Inspection reveals an awful lot of small screws, but, to me, no obvious ones to undo to open it up. The most likely candidates are two at the back of the gun compartment, but are there more? Is there anyone who has opened up one of these who can help, please?

frankie is a bit of an expert moding these, might be worth catching his attention.

Would be very useful photographing and posting a strip down.

If I remember correctly there's a couple of screws at each end of the cargo bed which allows the removal of the gun deck(two at the front are under the radio/ammo)..this gets you to the electrics...there's also screws that hold the back exposed...the cabs held with a screw underneath at the front and two behind the seats...
remember...it's just a plastic tank... :/

Thank you frankie, a great help. I had not spotted the ones under the radio. Once I have all the bits, I will record it all and post pictures. At the moment, my already cluttered workspace is not able to handle anything else.

I've managed to clear some space and the new Elmod board has arrived, so I have made a start.

There is not a lot of room inside. Fortunately the Elmod is purpose built and fits using the same fixing points. I could do with some guidance though. The existing speaker is only 30mm diameter and very thin. Has anyone suggestions for a suitable replacement, please? I understand that the fitted one will not take the output from the board.

If no suggestions, an idea of what sort of output wattage would help my search.

Unfortunately, the change over is going to take somewhat longer than I would have hoped and anticipated. On removing the Torro board, I discovered that the alternative power feed from a battery pack, rather than AA cells, was hard wired to the board. The plug and play Elmod does make any allowance for this, so I shall have to adjust the wiring for the power connections.

The second problem is that the receiver I was intending to fit simply won't. The pins for the channel connectors lie at right angle to the body of the receiver, and with the height required for the connectors, it is a non- starter. I have managed to find an alternative (I think) but have to wait for it to arrive to be certain.

Finally, I am still struggling to find a suitable speaker, so I will repeat my questions from above. What would be the minimum acceptable power output and can anyone recommend one that will fit in such a confined space, please?

Thank Alwyn - ebay only 4 ohms - Elmod recommends 8 ohm. The ones from amazon look absolutely ideal.
