HL KV1 tracks and wheels - tracks riding sprocket in turns

Post by wyvern »

I have built the chassis of my KV-1 which has a metal hull, idler and plastic wheels and tracks. I have noticed that the tracks can ride up the sprocket in turns on the inside track but are fine running forwards and back (I have checked the sprockets). I noticed the tracks have about 2.5 mm of float between the wheels and think that this might be causing the problem as the track shifts across within the wheel gap in the turns and doesn't align with the sprocket so well. Has anyone else had this problem? I was thinking of putting spacers in the reduce the play. Do the metal wheels have a smaller gap and so solve this problem? I am running only a small amount of track sag and ideally don't want to have to run them rubber bad tight!

Thanks

You have a picture??

I have heard that plastic tracks on metal sprockets have a very poor fit, so you might need to go full metal or full plastic on the sprockets and tracks, to have the best fit.

Mine is all metal and rides fine with quite some slack on the tracks

I've no problems with metal hull, tracks & wheels (other than one keeps falling apart) or with plastic hull, wheels & tracks.

Its all plastic at the moment. Its probably running on half the slack shown on yours. Just been trying to save money and avoid an all metal upgrade

Looks about the same as my plastic tracked one. Can't actually get to it at the moment. The metal tracks are much looser.

Check the springs in the front & rear road wheels, if they're not correctly seated they could cause the track to stick when turning. Might be the angle, but the rear looks very high.

Hi ,

now that I have managed to get my camera working, I have attached some pics. The hull I have is an asiatam one but I have rebuilt the suspension so that it is now completely adjustable. it is using plastic wheels, tracks and sprockets, 4:1 steel gears with support bearings.

I think its the sideways movement of the tracks in the wheels thats the problem (see below). So in a turn it pushes the tracks to one side and so out of engagement with the sprocket - or maybe I am running too little tension for plastic tracks? I am trying to resist going to all metal as a cost saving measure as i have a larger 1/8th scale conqueror that needs my money more :D

One thing to check for is that the sprockets are assembled properly. I done it a few times with metal sprockets. If they are not assembled right the teeth do not line up looking from the rear of the tank in your case with the kv. Its easy to tell with the tracks on if the teeth are not aligned with each other as one will be higher up on the groove where they grip the track. Mind you, you are running the plastic sprocket so it should be glued together from the factory so they should be good but its just a thought!
