Brainstorming - Realistic Tank Recoil and Variable Suspensn
Brainstorming - Realistic Tank Recoil and Variable Suspensn
The last word of the title reads "Suspension." Work with me guys...
Even in modern tanks, when the main gun is fired, the whole tank moves with the recoil. This, however, isn't much of a rearward movement, but more of the suspension, particularly the rear, soaking up the recoil, so the tank dips to the rear (or whatever side opposite of the gun, e.g. when gun is fired to the right, the tank dips to the left, etc).
Have any of you guys tried to simulate this? Some of the RC tanks like the HL M1, the road wheel arms have pegs that go through holes in the hull. I was thinking maybe some small, hi-torque / hi-speed servos connected to these pegs and the servos activate when the main gun is fired. Other tanks like the HL Leo, however, this is problematic as there are no such pegs. And then there are the aftermarket metal hulls that use torsion springs like the real thing. Perhaps for such hulls, a weight transfer system that activates?
Also, some tanks like the Japanese Type 10 have variable suspension, i.e. these can be controlled by the driver so that the tank sits lower, "stands on one leg," or "kneels" in a static position. Again, I'm thinking servos.
Problem of course is space, but still....

Re: Brainstorming - Realistic Tank Recoil and Variable Suspe
I've seen it in 1/35 tanks. Servos controlling the front and rear swing arms so the suspensin can be dipped or flexed at appropriate times, like braking and the front dips as the rear lifts and opposite on acceleration.
I think it was controlled with an Arduino, since it wasn't something you'd want to be doing manually.

What, me worry?
Re: Brainstorming - Realistic Tank Recoil and Variable Suspe
I find it ironic that in fact the physics is actually correct...... The tank is moving backwards, but the traction between the tracks and the ground is why the oppositing force is translated into the dip in the suspension........ For example, if you look at a wheeled artillery firing, what you get in recoil is in fact the whole gun moving backwards.......

It's evident and impressive how the suspension absorbed the recoil

Alpha, is that an 85mm in that KV2?ALPHA wrote:Have posted this photo before

doesn't look like the usual gun
You can never have too many tanks......

Good afternoon,
I remember this from building the 'Palace'. That is a Soviet experimental mounting of their 122mm anti-tank gun in the KV-2 turret. Quite a blast as it visibly rocks the entire 52 ton tank back on it's suspension. Note the open door in the rear to vent gas from the gun. Check out the one about to be deafened officer type in white who neglected to cover his ears.
regards,
Painless

Not sure Rob...the details are vague...will try and look it up again....we had a long discussion about that model of the KV a year or two ago...The input was pretty interesting to say the leastKTRob wrote:Alpha, is that an 85mm in that KV2?ALPHA wrote:Have posted this photo before

OOPS...should have read Painless's reply first...yup he was in the discussion as wellPainlessWolf wrote:Good afternoon,

Re: Brainstorming - Realistic Tank Recoil and Variable Suspe
I've been watching the WWII in Color series (or was it The Color of War?) and I noticed a couple things from the tank footage.
First, when the Tigers would fire the tank wouldn't move at all, just the gun recoil.
Second, the T-34/76 and KV-1 had no recoil whatsoever lol.

Hey, I got an idea...
Tanks: HL M26 Pershing, HL M1A2 Abrams, Taigen M4 76, HL M45 Pershing, 1/18 PZ IV, VS Abrams, [coming soon]
