Old Newbie

Post by DonGilham »

Hi Folks

My first foray into the world of (1/16th) RC Tanking.

Previously an avid wargamer (WWII and Napoloeonic) but most of my knowledge has left me (like the majority of my brain cells), although I do still hold on to a 28mm US Armoured Infantry platoon :)

Questions, questions, questions - just one for now, please. Heng Long, Taigen or Torro ? (I fancy a Panther)

Ahhh a supplementary :D Why are there no Panthers in a realistic '44 European colour scheme ?

Thanks for any help, always much appreciated.

Hi DON, Welcome to the Forum,
You want a Panther, well first a history lesson coupled to a warning,
When HENG LONG first made a 1/16 r/c Tank they realised that as Toy Makers the TIGER 1 would appeal to the widest audience, they also realised that they would have to follow that with another Tank,
The wheels and tracks of both Tiger 1 and the Panther are almost identical, so to keep production costs down they produced a Tank body to fit the Tiger 1 hull and running gear, the stretched disaster was marketed as a Panther,
Remember the Tiger 1 was a HEAVY TANK and the Panther was a MEDIUM TANK,
This abortion IS NOT A PANTHER!!
The kind hearted call it a PAN TIGER other more honest people use more base terms.
The Panther is more properly modelled by TAIGEN but do avoid the PAN TIGER.
As to colours we have more advise about paint finishes for Tanks than you could possibly imagine.

Thanks Shaun, that's solved one problem.

Taigen NOT Heng Long for a Panther :) What about Torro ?

Any tips about UK shops ? (I'm cruising EvilBay at the moment)

(i'm just like a sponge at the moment :D )

DON, Instead of looking at E-BAY which by all means do later First scroll down to our BLACKLIST SITE, you will see some well known names I beg you from some one who has been ripped off by one of these crooks AVOID   then view the RECOMMENDED VENDORS SITE, We buy from these people you would not go far wrong if you did and of course any doubts ASK US,
I offer two dealers who sell TAIGEN TANKS both of these people are members of this Forum and are 4 square in their treatment of their customers= first "STEVE" at
www.welshdragonmodels.co.uk
and =
theallertons@fsmail.net
this dealer "DAVE" is also on E-BAY as FORGEBEAR

Shaun, just one more word of advice, please.

This, to me, looks quite tasty - any adverse comments please ? I have taken your advice (of course) and narrowed down on to the Recommended Sellers.

And why is this one better ?

Don sorry I felt compelled to watch the championship Snooker!
The more expensive Panther is the absolutely latest model which includes a 360 degree turret (99% of 1/16 Tanks have a maximum turret turn of 320 degrees) although in this case what you would be paying for is the Paint job,
The dealer selling these wonders is a top German vendor and I in common with many other members of the Forum buy from them with confidence.

Don't worry Shaun, you'll get over it :D

Thanks again - I have been delving myself (well not myself, but) and wonder if the more expensive one has the BB barrel recoil ?

DON, The new model Panther "G" airsoft main gun DOES have taigen's own recoil system.
If I had 500 Euros even though I have never been that keen on the Panther I might just buy one, the trouble is it looks so complete that a builder like me would be frustrated to all get up looking to fiddle with it. :lolno:

I know what you mean, Shaun, I love to "tinker" too (although I'm not a builder as such) - it will have a repaint in to my preferred paint scheme though (sand/brown/green avec spots)
