Puppy Power

Post by Jake79 »

Hi All

Thought you might like to see a few pics of our unexpected Christmas puppies, It was quite funny really, been thinking about getting a dog for a while hadn't had one for a year or so...didn't really fancy going the puppy root with all the training etc, and by luck a friend had a 7 year old gunner Labrador who had become gun shy, so we went to pick her up and off home she came with us..well anyway a few weeks later, two days before Christmas we awoke to Fern and her two puppies, I'd never been so shocked nobody knew she was pregnant, by the the end of the day she had 8 lol heres some pics :P

Well I don't know about expense, do you know what those pups will sell for, even without papers? We paid £450 for our labradoodle who is not a brilliant specimen but we love him (I think, well most of the time, except when he isn't destroying things....... Hmmm  ).
Example of pups for sale. Don't forget they will need jabs etc so will not be cheap but you should get your money back plus some.

Hope they bring you much joy and not too many problems.

They are soooo cute! Labs are such great dogs too! Very lucky. What did the previous owner say? Did he know she was pregnant? Does he want the pups?

Hey Alwyn, our last lab had puppies long time ago now, but it didn't prove to hard to sell them and yes I know you can get quite a good price for the pup's, the guy we took Fern from say's he paid a few thousand for her when she was fully trained at 18 months old..

Jack, no the guy said he had no idea either she was pregnant, Fern lived in kennels before we got her with no males, but next door on the other side of the fence, lives some spaniels, so we guessing there must of been a few holes in the fence... :wtf: she's such a slim dog I never would of guessed she was carrying 8 pups..still its a lot fun and ofc a fair bit of work..

They don't look to be mixed with a Spanial they look like pure Lab. And just cause she was in a kennel doesn't mean one of the males couldn't have climbed the fence to get at her. If they were mixed I would have expected either some color other then coal black or wirery fur but it doesn't look like either to be the case.

Great story , they look like labs to me and even if they are mixed , first cross dogs are all the rage now and make healthy dogs .

A word of caution about cross dogs being healthier than pure-bred. We have a labradoodle who is now three years old and we got him because of all the problems with our previous pure-bred standard poodle who we had to have put to sleep at age 7 due to dementia (which was heartbreaking as he was otherwise an incredibly strong and healthy animal). Dougal (our labradoodle) has a variety of problems including lack of stamina, a weakness in his hindquarters which we think is incipient arthritis, and an allergy to seawater (which is common in dogs but extreme in his case - and frustratingly he loves the beach and the sea!).

We have concluded from our own experience and that of a number of friends who have had similar experience with their cross breeds is that you are as likely to have problems witha cross as you are with a pure bred dog. We have discussed this with our vet and she agrees with this view as in her experience she has had just as many problems with crosses as purebreds.

All that said we wouldn't be without our crazy dog as he brings joy (and some agravation) to our lives and we feel blessed to have him.
