M48, M60a1 Patton

Hey Guys, It has been a while since I have any thing to offer around here, but I have been lurking the entire time of my break. :) So now the snow is flying here in the Rockies, and am looking to pickup a build this winter. I have always considered building a M48 or M60A1 Patton. I see that Century makes a 1/18t scale static. Sure, I could go through it and motorize it. Or, I could get a Pershing chassis and have it with some fab work and some casting. Perhaps Santa could bring me a 3d printer this year. ;D I have been good.

Anyways, if I am going to build another one this winter, I want to step my game up a bit. That being said, adding power to the Century version would probably about as big of challenge converting one out of the Henglong Pershing. Thoughts?

I appreciate any input. Thanks in advance.

And the M48, I prefer to build this one. It looks a bit more appealing to build from scratch.

pale,

I just started collecting parts for a M48 build, and my thought is to use the Century 21 Upper and mate it to a HL Pershing lower with mods. Couple of my last builds have been cutting the Heng Long lowers to fit the upper (Century 21 Bradley M2 using a Pz III lower, and a Tamiya JS-2 using a KV lower) so I am going to give this a go.

I think the challenge would be how to "jack" up the Pershing lower to look the part, and also the front and back end integration.

Good luck with build also and looking forward to seeing it.

Thanks for the response Michael. That probably makes the most sense, perhaps making a bit more costly as well, unless a good buy can be found somewhere on parts. Another thought I had after doing some reseach would be to do an IDF Magach version of the M48 or M60. I think that would be allow a bit more freedom in the fabrication department, as well as increase the amount of work on the build.

Hi all
The m48 is on my list to build at some point in the not to distant future ,,and the pershing chassis is the only real prospect in town as a starting point ,.the pershing chassis is to short and the wheel spacing areally also totally wrong ..so it really means a real slice n dice of the pershing chassis

Thai is want I have been up for for a good few months ,,the nose of the M103 is a lot shallower longer than the m48 the engine deck and back end are a real night mare ..but I am slowly getting there

pale, I am hoping to do this on the cheap........ You can find 1/18 M48 for about $40 USD on eBay, and thanks to dgsselkirk, I just purchase his extra Pershing for $40 CAD. So my total is about $100 CDN at this point which is chum change. Don't have the scratch build skill like yourself or mcevoyi's, cutting a piece here, or bending a piece there and hopefully have something decent.

Iain, if I am using the 1/18 M48, then maybe the 1/16 Pershing would be the right length ?!??! :-)

Spacing is whole different issue.

This was a big help. Especially in the drive train. Thanks for posting.

Good morning, Palepainter,
There is a site out there that makes a business out of RC-ing the various 1/18 builds from 21st Century Toys. One of their big sellers is the Patton. You'll have more fun taking one of the stock 1/18 tanks and adding an RC lower hull and making your own brand of the M48. For viewing fun, their URL is: http://www.radiocontrolcustomtanks.com/Workshop.html
regards and following along ;o)

Thanks Painless. I appreciate the link. I haven't been able to find a Century M48 anywhere online. I will keep my eyes peeled, in the mean time, I will pick up a Pershing ...again. :)
