Asiatam KV-1 Query

Hi,
I have finally bit the bullet and ordered some parts for my Kv-1 build. Originally, I was going to wait for the new batch of taigen IR kv-1s but decided having seen the offers on not quite perfect hulls at asiatam.de that I would build it from a HL IR KV-1. the bits I ordered were;
Asiatam KV-1 Chassis
Axles + bushings for KV-1 wheels
Asiatam metal sprockets and idler
I remembered after I had bought the asiatam sprockets that these only work with asiatam or tamiya tracks but hopefully I can carefully file them to a good fit for the Heng long plastic tracks. Is there anything else I need to know when buying the transmission? are the Taigen short shaft 4:1 boxes suitable or are the mounting holes a bit different? Do the Taigen boxes clear the HL smoker? Also am I right in thinking that Asiatam and Taigen are essentially selling the same hulls or are there minute differences? Phew... Sorry about all the questions but I thought I would try get them all down in one go.
Thanks
Guy

Hiya Guy , If You are keeping the HL tracks you can still use the HL plastic sprockets - they are suprisingly durable ( and cheap ) - And long shaft , black steel 4 to 1 gearboxes , they will fit HL / Mato / Taigen sprockets . Asiatam stuff only fits Asiatam , sorry .

I had to file down the Asiatam sprocket teeth to get it to mesh corectly with the tracks.
Shaft length I can't remmeber. I do remember it was opersite the HL ones I took off.

I only have experience with my Taigen KV*.
Taigen 4:1 have same 3 mounting holes as HL's 3:1, The taigen KV has a mounting plate for the gearboxes -to clear the torsion bars. The 4:1 are High/Low vs the stock 3:1's Mid/Low motor mounting. The left exhaust smoke outlet fitting with hose "will" hit the High (left) gear box*. I nibbled around the motor area of the gear box so it is the same height as the motor and used hollow rectangle styrene with the cut nipples to move things (I did both but only one side is needed):
Don't have picture of "nibbled" gearbox but you can see the area that is higher than the left motor that is contacting exhaust fitting:

My advice if looking for realistic speed: even with the 4:1's the KV's sprockets (large dia) give a pretty "tall" overall ration, so use some low rpm motors, I'm using some high performance 380's that are 70 turns that are used in a rock crawler - I paid too much for these (30+ea)...after finding these: 11K rpms:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wt ... LXVFJ8&P=6 8500 rpm:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wt ... LXVFJ7&P=6 and 5000 rpm:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wt ... LXVDV1&P=6
I bought 2 8500's to test for future builds.
On a side note: I like the High/Lows there are NO hard to get at screws!

Thanks guys for your advice. I was originally under the impression that the metal sprockets were short shaft - this is obviously not the case. So I will either;
1) Run the plastic sprockets on long shaft 4:1s
2) Run the asiatam sprockets on short shaft 4:1s
3) Buy some metal HL sprockets and run them on short shaft 4:1s
I will probably buy short shaft boxes and fettle the asiatam sprockets - if that doesn't work I will have to buy some taigen sprockets.
Its good that there is all this advice just a typed message away.
Thanks
Guy

* 3) -' HL metal' sprockets are actually Taigen/Mato - they are identical and interchangable with HL's plastic ones . ( All long shaft )

I used 48mm shafts on my Taigen KV. They are the bearing on output shaft only version, they are a hand-me-downs from my T1 when the full bearings V2's were installed.
http://www.imex-model.com/category/90/P ... e%20Select
click on the 3:1 mid/low 48mm (TAG14005S) you'll see the KV listed as compatible, but not listed under the 4:1 H/L 48mm (TAG14010S) because of the smoke system interference -they will work by deleting or modification.

HI
Are the 11K rock crawler motors ok just to plug into the RX-18 Board or do you use IBU,El-Mod instead
cheers

- Don't waste time filing the Asiatam sprockets - They won't fit anyway . I just checked mine and both the diameters and track pitch are way out
