It's finally here!!! My Tamiya Jagdpanther.

Post by Glory71 »

Hi guys. Thought I post this here.

I am just so happy to have finally been able to hold my Tamiya Jagdpanther. Jeez!!!...the manufacturers of this thing pack 'em so well I almost did not want to open it. I actually just stared at it for a couple of minutes and well...just a couple...lol...it is a mess now in my work room.

2nd photo is a picture of my old Sherman Tank that I got way back in 1998. As you can see it has all gathered dust. I'll upgrade it later as it currently only has 2 channels. Grompix, I might need your help here. I want to make this just like yours. The way you hid those battle units is amazing!

3rd photo is my HL Tiger I that has been in pieces since 2006. I'll probably start working on this late this year.

I built my Sherman Tank just as instructed on the manual. Never did mod anything. But with this new kit...the Jagdpanther, I have you guys and I guess I should be good. I remember looking at the thread started by BREL on his Jagdpanther. I read it so many times that I think I've memorized all the wordings...lol. First thing I did was to buy those primers (even before the tank arrived).

Things I did not like with the Tamiya Sherman Tank:

1. Speaker system
2. Plastic Tracks
3. Packaging - They packed it so good I did not want to open it...lol.

Speaker system. I don't like it. It sounds like you are inside a cathedral with a tank...lol. It's like I am listening to a Gramophone record. It certainly does not sound like digital. More like analog. Funny I never really noticed this when I was playing with my Sherman Tank back then.

And so I opened it...

The design of the speaker box both inside and out is...I don't know what to call it...wrong?! lol. The guy who designed this probably has never been with a woman before...lol. Seriously now...I'll try...>>...so I decided to let go of the tamiya speaker and its box. I decided to separate the high and the low frequency by getting a tweeter and sub-woofer coupled with a cross over. Keeping my fingers crossed and hoping not to burn my house, I switched power on and the result was amazing. It is like listening to Paul Potts (Not Pol Pot - the ruthless Cambodian communist leader...lol) singing to her majesty - the Queen. Please see attached photo. Now if I can just figure out how to actually put this in.

Questions:

1. For the tracks...which works best - the HL metal tracks, impact, or Matotoys? Impact products are simply expensive so if you guys think that I am better off with Matotoys, I'll get that one.
2. I read that the current Tamiya gearbox either too fast or does not have a torque. What would you recommend?

Appreciate the help guys and more power to your site.

Cheers

I have improved my Jagdpanther by adding the ball race set for the road wheels and also adding impact tracks and drive sprockets. both of which I got from Steve at www.welshdragonmodels.co.uk. I am going to get the impact gear boxes when he has them in stock again, mainly because the Tamiya  gearboxes are too fast and do not have the 3:1 reduction ratio in them.

Good to hear you've got your Jagdpanther! The only thing I've done so far with mine is review the parts and read the instructions  :D I've ordered the Impact sprocket wheel guides to add to it's detail, along with sealed bearings at ETOarmor. Currently contemplating on whether I should get the transmission covers at wecohe. Enjoy your build! Keep us posted!  ;)

I see you've got quite an arsenal back there.

No problem Glory71 - glad to help. I could do with a tutorial on how you changed the Tamiya speaker system too. I replaced the gearboxes in my Tamiya Panther with Impact ones, and then promptly ripped them out as they were far too noisy. I run my Panther with HL 3-1 metal gearboxes now - perfect. No adverse high-pitch whining, great scale speed and lots of torque.

thank you so much for the quick reply guys. It's 3:32 am here in CT as of this writing. I have loaded myself with coffee. I guess I can go on without sleeping for days.  :) Curse satan's butt one screw fell into my coffee (part MD3)...lol.

I already have the ball bearings for the road wheels. It arrived last week. Got it off ebay from HK 17.50 bucks shipped.

These impact products is going to have a terrible impact on my wallet :-\.  Any other choice?

Weapon - those are just airsoft guns - AEG (automatic electric gun). I co-founded the biggest airsoft team here in the northeast. You should try it sometime. Good for your health.

Chris - yes please Chris...how'd you improve/ change the Tamiya speaker? HL 3-1 metal gearboxes...thats more like it. It is only 50 bucks. Atleast I won't sleep in the gutter if my wife finds out...>>. And what did you use for the metal tracks?

I bought Impact tracks for my Tamiya Panther. They are fantastic tracks but the price (ouch!). I recently bought a set of black metal HL tracks from Forgebear (£42.99) for my Panther A scratch build. They don't have the cool hollow guide horns like Impact of course but they look and function very well.

I don't know how to improve the Tamiya speaker though - that's why I asked you - LOL  :D

I was sorta keeping the Impact TUs for another project BREL but I suppose if I get the right offer...  ;)

I figured they were airsoft  ;D just wanted to make sure... lol.... I myself have been playing airsoft since 2003, but decided to lay low for a while, I let go of practically all of my guns though I play pistol games once in a while.....

Back to the topic at hand! Have you decided if you're going to be building the late or early model? I came across this forum... http://worldwartwozone.com/ (I hope it's not against forum rules to point to another forum). look under Arsenal->Land warfare.... There's quite a lengthy thread for the Jagdpanther with lots of pix.... It also contains other lengthy threads of other favorite tanks of ours!

By the way, which ebay seller did you get your bearings from?
