Walker Bulldog upgrade reccomendations

Post by IneptVirus »

Hey guys,

I recently bought my first tank, the basic plastic Heng Long Walker Bulldog from maplins (employee discount ftw). Anyway, I bought it intending to upgrade all the (important) parts to metal. After searching for ages, even through the reccomended retailers section of this site, I've found it super hard to find any reasonably priced parts for it that I want.
So this is where I need your guys help :) Firstly I was wondering what drivetrain parts to upgrade first (tracks, sprocket, gears, motor), and also I need help finding the actual parts in online stores that arnt ridiculously prices.
Would you guys mind pointing me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance, Inept

Sorry Virus... the Walker probably has the least parts available for it...Metal Tracks along with the Sprockets is all I know of :|

Thanks for reply ALPHA,
I guess I'll have to try and find what I can for it then :/ I've found tracks, sprocket and gearbox so far, albeit quite expensive compared to what I'm putting them on. Might mod the plastic tracks with anti-slip tape too. Apart from that, I'll figure some stuff out along the way :P

It might surprise you to know that the mods the Bulldog needs to make it more accurate are free, which makes it pretty unique in the RC tank world.

I've built three, the first had metal tracks and sprockets, metal gearboxes, and ran an RX14 with Speed 400 motors.
The second had plastic tracks, plastic gearboxes ran an RX18 with a DBC for IR, and standard motors, it was fine. Later upgraded the electrics to an SLU, and then a Clark TK22 as I like sounds on my tanks.

My current one is running plastic tracks and sprockets, an IBU2 and Taigen Jagdpanther black metal gearboxes.

The Bulldog runs perfectly on plastic running gear, and that makes it a great cheap tank. It means more money available for upgraded electronics which is what turns it into a 'proper tank'.

You can buy a metal barrel from http://www.tank-modellbau.de/m41kwk.jpg, if you want a muzzle flash this is the one to get as it is hollow. It is also ideal if you want to convert it to a recoil, which is what I did on Bulldog no.2.

All of the build mods are here: viewtopic.php?f=22&t=13827

Bulldog no.2

Bulldog no.3

Have fun, the Bulldog is a brilliant tank to have.

New years Greet Virus.... It's sometimes good to take the leap to the pro model of any RTR no matter the brand....as the metal add ons really add on if done afterwards...with that said though...there is nothing wrong with the plastic gears or tracks...if you epoxy the clutch on the gearbox so it doesn't slip...they will be strong enough to go over some pretty rough stuff....just don't do it too much lol....the plastic tracks are pretty durable too...though I kind of like metal because of the small amount of unsprung weight it gives...and the added traction

Now as far as detailing your Walker...there are a few on the board that came out rather well....there is a Striking one..(unfortunately I don't recall the title ). if you use the search feature at the top you might find it...it's a vietnam version...the builder used a camera flash for a search light...I think it is one of the finest versions I've seen on the board :D

Have fun with that Walker Virus

Hi Virus,
I think the Bulldog 'Alpha' is referring to, might be mine. (The camera light was the hint!)
You can find it in - 'Things to fix on your new tank' - then - 'HL Bulldog' - then - 'BB warning light and flashing periscope'.
(Sorry for the long-winded directions but I couldn't get the link to upload).
I bought the basic M41 then detailed and painted it to my own, slightly eccentric tastes. It's called 'Black Widow/White Rabbit' and represents a fairly typical, but non-specific tank from the Vietnam era. I didn't add any upgrade parts. What you see is what came out of the box with mostly scratch-built detailing, with a few items scavenged and salvaged from the spares box and the attic. If you like it and want to know how some of the added detail was done, PM me and I'll happily try to help.
I'm what some might call an 'old school' modeller - a bit of a 'scratch-building, brush-painting, sprue-stretching, pencil and dry-brush weathering and letraset decalling' dinosaur!
The HL Bulldog thread has several other useful threads and plenty of ideas for mods in addition to mine.
The Bulldog is a cracking tank for the money and is a great choice for a first dip into the hobby.
Have a look and have some fun.

Cheers, Seafire.
