3D-Arc

Post by hotte8487 »

The one or the other may have it noticed - I placed once an artistic break - break - that's not really true. Basically it's also military modelling - but this time the model isn’t a tank, but a medieval castle.
Matching to the Christmas time, I've dedicated myself to a slightly different handicraft - fretwork; therefore the Tiger has a little break.
Fretwork is not really new to me, but the last works are already back over 25 years.
Here is the short report.
The starting material was naturally plywood in the required size; it was used poplar plywood with 4 mm thickness.

Image

All the parts were then transferred according to the present plan with blue paper.

Image

Then follows drilling the cuttings and of course the saw works itself - many parts with still more holes.
Overall have the arc 5 plains; the two outer sheets, two parts castle and a middle part with a tower; which had all to be cut out by hand - pictures...

With external dimensions of approximately 70 cm x 40 cm is a fretsaw with the largest possible stirrup required.

After all parts were cut out, followed the grinding of all parts - a not to underestimated work step. Then followed the installation of the two inner plains. For the arc foot was used a sheet of plywood with a thickness of 4 mm. This plate receive some slits according to the plains; after that was this plate glued on a second plate of plywood with 16 mm thickness.

The two inner plains and the central plate have now been brought into the final position, equipped with the holders for the lights and glued to the foot plate.

Now following the installation of the two outer plates; these were previously also provided with holders for the fairy lights. A couple of small adjustments were necessary and already he was finished - the 3D Light Arch.

That arch is really a work of art Hotte....I like it....Is it something traditionally displayed there?

Hello Alpha,

nice that you like my fretsaw work. Traditionally - yes, of course.
In some areas in Germany (mostly in the south) is it usual during winter and especially to Christmas to decorate the houses and the living rooms with some art works. To these works counts fretsaw works, woodturning and also carvings. As art works are usual Christmas pyramids, incense smokers, nutcrackers, Christmas tree jewelry and of course also candle arches.
The motifs are going mostly in one direction - winter landscape, churches and Christmas but sometimes also a bit different, depending on the area. In the Erzgebirge (ore mountains) for example there are also many motifs which shows mining scenes.

I wish you a good slip in the new year!

I have to say Hotte...I sure am learning a lot from you...when I first saw the arch...something that was said in the movie Battle of the Bulge popped into mind...where Deitrich says "Germans make the best toys in the world" then going on to say how he needed tanks ....seeing this arch...and it's simplistic cut outs that cast light and shadows really speaks volumes of you...the culture you were brought up from...and the history that still is hidden from view from outsiders like me

It's really something...like I said before...I really like it ...

HAPPY NEW YEAR WISHES to you and yours as well Hotte :D

And I hope I can learn from you - do I name this tool (with the nice red handle) better fret saw or coping saw? My big dictionary says fret saw is the best translation.
What says the tool freak to that? ???

Says... That's cool :D ...because I once again learn something new from you Hotte....the term Fret ...I usually associate with musical instruments...so would never go looking really for a Fret saw ...but it's totally logical...as many musical instruments have fine cut outs like you did in the creation of the arch ...I used the term coping saw relatively loosely as that's what I usually refer to when seeing the thin bladed bow saw....
Image
your run of the mill coping saw.... doesn't have the depth of yours Hotte...thus I think the different name :D

Thank you sir for the lesson...I will look and hopefully find myself a Fret saw to add to my tool box ;)

Happy New Years Eve Hotte...all the best to you and yours in the coming New Year

Eastern Front wrote:Hi Hotte,

I really like your ARC.. My wife and I had the privilege to have lived in Hochheim Am Main for about 8 years.. I then lived in GrafenWohr for another 3 years.. We really loved Christmas in Germany, going to the WiehnachtMarkt's was especially a joy.. We really miss it still and look forward to our next trip over there!

Have a great New Year, I look forward to more of your projects!

Cheers!
Many thanks Eastern Front,

I wish you and your wife also a happy new year!

Hey Hotte...just thought I'd let you know...fret saws seem to be primarily located in Europe...Checked on EBAY and found most of the sellers are in the UK...think I'll have to fabricate one ;)
