The old clutch type gears Canned? it won't work with the Taigen RX or HL...you need a board that supports servos ...if you want to simplify the set ...change it out ;)

Hi canned
I run 2 tanks (a early Gepard circa 1974 and a Scratch built sherman prototype) that are still fitted with the early tamiya clutch gears, the 540 motor in mine can draw up to 9 amps if stalled, I use a RC5HL through a turnigy radio to run the RX-18 for sound lights and turrent controls and then a 10amp ESC direct from the reciever to run the motors and a servo also direct from reciever to control the clutches for steering . if that helps you at all.

denzil....a bit above and beyond me old chap, do you think the motors wired direct to rx 18 it would work perhaps having to bypass the clutch some how ....? any pics of your work in the Sherman ?

I thought about doing this to the Tamiya KT I have...after weighing in all the options..felt it was better to just take out the clutch drivetrain...you need the servos to actuate the clutch..Separate gearboxes are much easier to deal with...the clutch drive does work pretty well....but I think that's why Tamiya eventually changed to separates ...it's just simpler ;)

Hey canned I did the grompix mod on mine where I removed the clutches and the centre gear then cut the motor mounts lower so each motor engages a gear and hey presto it runs like a normal setup if you are coming to the next mad meet on the 28th ill show you

Hi canned I don't think the RX-18 will take the current draw from the tamiya motors of the old clutch /motor units they are nearly double the HL motors (last time I tested a HL motor it only drew 4.3 amps when stalled whereas the tamiya motors drew 9.1 amps).
I have a photo showing the first test setup of my sherman layout that worked okay, the only differance to the final layout was adding the RC5HL circuit board next to the reciever on the back wall and then the RX-18 on the side wall behind the steering servo. The speaker is an old 50mm dia speaker that came out of a old cassette player and was very slim and so mounted to the top hull under the engine covers. When I get my camera back from my son I take some photo's of the installation.
The Gepard is a similar layout except the gepard clutch / motor unit only has a single motor but the current draw is about the same, and therefore the same 10amp ESC is adequate.
The layout might sound complicated but these days I use Mtronic ESC and they are all plug and play and virtually set them selves up.
I will say in my opinion the old clutch/motor setup give a very realistic drive set up for the old tanks as they virually mimic the old clutch and brake action to the tracks and look quite realistic when being driven.
