Hi All

Lately I've seen a few static Tamiya's about here and on German e-bay at really good prices, having limited knowledge of tank electronics myself, I have Rx18s, Taigens 2.4s and Tamiyas DMDs, but no experience of an aftermarket setup..I just wanted to know how you guys rate the IBU2 against the DMD....

Well I can chime in with my two pennies worth- the IBU2 is great, lots of features, good sound and adjustability, easy to wire in and swap between tanks/ add sounds and relativity cheap, I have not used the Tamiya dmd/ mfu's but as I understand it there pretty bomb proof but you can't really do alot with them ie adjust any speeds/ performance / sounds etc. so I say IBU2! I love mine getting another soon!

The ibu is a great choice as it's very tamiya friendly, you can use the standard recoil, elevation etc and there are plugs for the battle system.

There's also the other nice bits like the excellent speed controller and customisable sounds which are great too.

If you already had tamiya electronics I'd probably stick with them but if your starting fresh it's a good choice!

Cheers Sponge, Tom, no I wouldn't replace any DMD units unless they were faulty I really like the Tamiya set up, all I'm thinking about are the static models I keep seeing.. wanted to have ago at converting one..was just unsure on the electronic side of things...good to know the Ibu is Tamiya friendly..thanks..

Hi Jake,

I've just started to convert a 1978 Gepard this week and and using the IBU2. Had it running with sounds in less than an hour

The Tamiya units are indeed pretty much bomb proof, but have been known to expire in isolated cases, though that can be said of any board (or anything electrical for that matter). That said they are very basic, and as many who use alternative systems will tell you, they offer no option to reprogram anything at all. You get what Tamiya give you, and that's it.

The IBU, Elmod, and the Clark boards are all excellent alternatives. They take up half the space, and are programmable, with sounds that are far closer to the real thing. The biggest bonus (for me at any rate) is the braking, and acceleration, they make a tank move off slowly, and when braking it is a 40 ton tank slowing down, rather than the off/on that a Tamiya gives you.

There are demo's of all of them on YouTube, well worth searching for just to see what people have done with them.

Heard bad things about those Clark boards, would def be an Ibu2 if I'm not using the DMD units, Ian's a member so if any probs, easy fix...

Yep that goes with out saying if board becomes faulty I'm your local contact for getting it fixed (if bought from me). Also offer free firmware upgrades for new features.
