M4A3E8 (Fury Movie) Sherman build
Well after much deliberation over which Torro Tiger to buiy I ended up buying a Heng Long Pro Edition Sherman with the 105mm Barrell.
Seen as I'm trying to recreate the Sherman from the movie Fury im after a replacement Barrell to represent the 76mm cannon with muzzle brake that was fitted.
Does anybody know where to get one from please?

You would be best off buying a Tamiya Sherman to do a Fury build. You'll need the proper turret and gun, but the Tamiya already has the tracks, suspension, welded hull, etc, etc. The Fury Sherman has the post-war (inaccurate) T-84 tracks, seen here: http://www.axels-modellbau-shop.de/kata ... 7518_2.jpg
If you're building an accurate to the movie version you can use those tracks. I'm under the impression IRL those tracks were never used in WWII. A Euorpean Easy Eight would have used the T-66 tracks or in some rarer cases T-80 tracks.
Nick Aguilar, I've heard that name too, has sold he E8 conversion kit for the Tamiya Sherman. Fury also uses the smaller gunners hatch where as some T23 turrets use the larger one. Another detail of note.
T66 tracks: http://www.tanksandtrolls.co.uk/images/ ... 812%29.JPG
T80 Tracks: http://eastcoastarmory.com/forumPic/m26 ... C00436.jpg
If you're going for cheap, sure nothing is cheaper than a Heng Long, but for accurate reproduction of the movie version you're going to need that Tamiya and a turret/gun to convert it to the right E8 model.
Here's a good HD reference pic of Fury, hope it helps. (Note: This version is missing some of the details like the gasmask and helmet on the tank) http://www.captmondo.com/wp-content/upl ... Fury-3.jpg

Hi guys, thanks for the info above.
If I had the funds to purchase a Tamiya Sherman I would have, but I'm looking forward to the challenge and I'm greatful for the advice about the extra parts that I will need to accomplish a tricky build like this.

Good Afternoon, Merlin,
This might help: http://www.rctank.de/Sherman-KwK-76mm-p ... oil-system and either slightly modify a Stug IV muzzle brake or use the Tamiya Pershing muzzle brake (smaller than the HL one ) or contact this fellow and see if he still makes the Easy Eight muzzle brakes: bobmorey2@yahoo.com Good luck and remember to have fun. Pictures of your build as you work on it, please.
regards,
Painless

Re: M4A3E8 (Fury Movie) Sherman build
Hi Painless, thanks for the info.
Must admit I'm rather excited about this upcoming build.
I noticed the suspension on the Fury picture provided is different to the one on the heng long model I have bought. Can this later model suspension be purchased aftermarket?

At the very least you can find Tamiya bits sold individually.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/9415499-tamiya- ... 51b6da6a39

http://www.ebay.com/itm/10006891-tamiya ... 51b8c20b92
That's not all of them, you'll have to figure out which you need and shop for them.
Here ya go: http://www.ebay.com/cln/as_fastcarmovie ... 5144890010
The cost is going to add up. Trust me of all people on this board, my Heng Long Tiger is up to over $1,000 in parts already. When it comes to spending money to upgrade a Heng Long anything is possible. Tamiya Shermans can be had for $400 new. A used Tamiya Sherman just sold for $200 on Ebay last night! In this case, keep your eyes peeled for one you can possibly strip parts for. RC Tank conversions can take years depending on how dedicated you are.
The names of the suspensions are:
Early (Heng Long, Mato): VVSS
Later (Tamiya only afaik): HVSS
90% of Shermans were VVSS in WWII.
Last but not least, it's your tank and your vision. Do whatever you want to do, purist or not, enjoy your tank and build whatever you want for your own enjoyment.

Re: M4A3E8 (Fury Movie) Sherman build
Thank you for the listings with regards to the suspension.
I would like to get as close to the Fury tank as possible but I'm far from been a purist and perfectionist.
I want to have enjoyment modifying and detailing my new tank and after looking at some of the build threads on here I'm finding lots of inspiration.
Can you convert a BB firing tank to a recoil version?

Re: M4A3E8 (Fury Movie) Sherman build
On the conversion; Sure, should be easy with Heng Long stuff. I've only got the Heng Long Tiger, PZIV and KV-1 so not sure what the Sherman parts look like but I'm guessing they are they same. I don't have a link handy but I know the parts for recoil are available online and the later board Heng Long (RX-18) easily adapts to IR with a few simple plugs, no soldering even needed. Crossing my fingers for you that you have an RX-18, they are much better than the early electronics. Maybe someone who has one can better answer this.
Nick contacted me about the turret today too. The full conversion of the E8 parts is $120. Not cheap, but accurate results. I plan to buy one of his kits. On the cheap you can get a Mato T23 turret instead so it looks close, but not perfect for a far lower price. The E8 Sherman also had different engine covers and a different transmission cover, maybe more little changes.
Looking forward to a build thread from you too. Always a good place to keep track of and get help with projects.

Re: M4A3E8 (Fury Movie) Sherman build
Just an additional note....If Merlin uses a Tamiya for his foundation...if it is the full option...it already should have recoil...Tamiya doesn't have BB units in their tanks...If he is going to use HL parts.... it is possible...but there would have to be mods made....the Sherman doesn't use the normal elevation motor...but one that rides on the side of the firing unit...You would have to acquire a Stug recoil unit.. as it has the slide mounted on the side of the firing mech for the elevation motor to work withSovereignZuul wrote:On the conversion; Sure, should be easy with Heng Long stuff. I guess this build is similar to what I do...there is no true rules to the build...as it is taken from a movie...mine are from an anime...Makes it fun sometimes...kind of like Oddball's Sherman... as The goal is something distant from a Historical build...But the Satisfaction is just as rewarding

Hi Merlin,
I might do one as well I have the tam Sherman and the mato T23 turret with the 76mm barrel used a panther muzzle break looks fine. All I need now is the top hull unit from the heng long M4A3 witch is the correct one for the E8. Will cost a bit but I think it's worth it
