U.S. M16 Halftrack R/C conversion?

Post by Dmon1996 »

I really like the 21st Century halftracks and ended up buying two M16's and a German Hanomag with PAK 40 Gun from one seller with a crazy great shipping price for all three. But of course, I can not leave anything stock- I have to monkey with them....

I've seen several posts on how to convert the Hanomag to R/C with a Tamiya drive, but I saw nothing on the US halftracks. Has anyone tried to convert an M16, and did it work? And if so, any pics?

I'm sure that I have lots of time before I start- my Sherman is still not finished, my Tiger I is still not finished and is slated for electronics replacement as well, and my Tamiya King Tiger is still untouched (except for drooling on it) new in the box. But I am very curious as I got only one Hanomag but two M16's. I could keep one untouched and put the saw to the other....

hi Dmon1996
the m16 has been rc'd before, i believe the place to have a look is panzerketten, its a german forum, it is in german, but you should be able to find youre way around it if you look carefully, you could also email thomas at elmod, i know they are doing (or have done) a module for the m16, so he should be able to point you in the right direction,

I've read posts on 'that other forum' where people have tried rc-ing the Trumpeter static M16, but they reported that the drive sprocket doesn't last long (isn't strong enough to take the side load from the track). Maybe if you back filled it with clear epoxy it would hold up :-\
I've seen prototypes of the official rc version demostrated at a trade show (probably from a link from 'that other forum'), so you might be better waiting a few months until that hits the stores and the aftermarket vendors start churning out upgrade parts for it.

Well, now that we know that 21st Century Toys is not going belly-up, I am more confident on chopping and grinding to do this conversion. I was concerned that I'd be chopping up a legacy....

I'd wait a while longer, if the likes of GM can go belly up then troubled toy makers like 21st Century won't be far behind...
