Matorro King Tiger

Post by Woz »

I took my KT for a spin-

Managed to lose two axel hubs, so I'm going to have to make some more before I take her out again.

Nice running KT but If I remember correctly german tanks and most others of the period did not have pivot steer. They had to lock up one track and use the other to turn. Try running it in tight spaces and doing a turn without pivot steer, its really quite a job to get turned around.

Very nice looking Tiger II you have there Woz. Looks great on the move.

Hi greengiant,

I thought this was the case too until I started to look into Tigers in a little more depth recently.

I now think that whilst most WWII era tanks were not able to pivot, both the Tiger and Tiger II, and the Panther had gearboxes and steering units which allowed them to perform a neutral turn (pivot). The gearboxes and steering were nowhere near as complex or reliable as modern tanks, and it seems it was not advisable to use a neutral turn to often, but it could be done.

This link gives a good explanation of the the gearbox/steering function of the Tiger.

I have also read that the Churchill and Char B may have had this capability, but I have not looked into that at all.

It is true to say that although able to neutral turn, they would not have been able to spin like crazy on the spot as some models will. I know some modellers like this capability when IR battling. I guess it all comes down to what you are building the model for and how you intend to use it.

Thanks, I was just pleased at how well it ran first time out.
