Pz IV Kugelblitz --Elmod--

Post by Graf Ralf Fies »

Hello,
I would like to present my Kugelblitz Project:

So, a little background: (various sources from the I-Net)

The Kugelblitz has been developed jointly by the Army Ordnance Department and Daimler-Benz and the design drawings of the templates in May 1944. Under the plans this vehicle should be the standard anti-aircraft tank. First came here a fully enclosed turret for the application, which was designed as a ball housing. The hydraulic swivel mechanism could be a target speed of 60 ° / sec can be achieved. The height swivel range went from - 7 to + 80 °. In the 20 mm thick armored tower was the commander, gunner and loader shooter. The commander instructed the gunner to the target by means of a downstream device. In the final version, the commander should have a small cupola with a periscope and a spatial image rangefinder. The armament consisted of two adjacent 30-mm cannons MK 103s / 38. It was a modified version of the flyer cannon MK 103, which had a rate of fire of 425 rounds / min and a firing range of 5700 m. As the first gun of the German army they had a belt-fed, which was a marked improvement over the magazines or framework used previously. Because of their relative to the 2-cm gun significantly higher firepower this flakkanone also called "fighter-fright". A total of 1,200 rounds of ammunition were carried. It was planned that the ball lightning was manufactured from February 30 1945 pcs / month and supersede all previous anti-aircraft tank. But during the war and there was not a mass production. By the end of 1944 only a small pilot series of five units were produced. The ball lightning was by far the most advanced anti-aircraft tank of the Second World War and was until the end of the fifties as a trend-setting design.

Image
ahrelang was written, probably the only remaining tower of the ball lightning would be in the study collection of the Royal Military College of Science in Shrivenham, England. Five Flakpanzer IV "Kugelblitz" to have been made on the basis of a U.S. report and prey almost completed two towers you've found at Mercedes-Benz in Berlin-Marie Felde. Well, the first published photos showed a ball of lightning tower obviously belonged to Shrivenham. But in Rendsburg ball lightning tower is located at the Air Defence School of the Bundeswehr. Meanwhile, also can be read on the internet that after a trial on the military training area Ohrdruf at least one anti-aircraft tank ball lightning still was used and that was at least another ball flash use in Spichra. In the course of advancing American troops around the 1st April 1945 there came the German positions on the mountain spade under constant fire and anti-aircraft tank was hit. His turret ring was until 1999 on a slope, before he was rescued and is now probably should be in the collection of the Military History Museum in Dresden

The old clips were poured using Stabbelit, puttied screw holes on the top, Geschossabweiser removed and smoothed and sanded the entire surface included.
The driver / radio operator hatch was installed slightly bevelled, as the Kugelblitz tower compared to the normal turret was greater

After milling of various bracings in the tail was started with the detailing. Maintenance hatches and water drain cover had to be changed.

It continues ...

Attach the stopper from the PE set from ABER.
A real test of patience, but the result compensated me after all. The stoppers are movable, and serve as fastening a shortened pin.
The upper bracket for the flaps are bent handle of brass strip and were fixed by superglue.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

The Bestigungen to sink still missing .... and the brace
Image

Image

The rivets were made ??and stuck around through Polyprofil. First I had placed some brass rivets. However, this continued to focus on the ground.
So the Polyabschnitte were glued and lightly triggered by Revellkleber. Then lightly sanded.
Image

Image

Image

Image

The antenna is of ABER. the part has a Zwischenstueck and is therefore even removable and must not be installed

Created spare track bracket.
Image

Uphill and tool holders of Voyager. These are a little more stable than that of ABER and therefore were installed.
Image

C-Haken-holder:
Bent and soldered sheet brass, is closed with a WING.

so you can already take a brief look at the RC components. recoil, height and directional light guide for muzzle flash.
it's all installed and working makes noise: D Above all very nice with the recoil. 40 --

Update VIII

Jack mount soldered together:

The other side will be provided with various brackets:
Image

The container for the pipe wiper linkage / cleaning appliance is created
Image

Remove the cover on the left oblique flap motor, milled and make up the hole with Stabelit:

Cable holder with safety chain (Tow of copper Asiatam)

Safety chain has been provided with hook

The tower takes up space, so the interior had to be kept flat. Rear loading jacks, volume control and on / off Schalter...zu accesible by the top flap.
Speaker, ElMod Pro and Blaster IV power there of a 4000 Lipo 7.4V.
Image

Image
The pan below is composed shortly before the final still braced with cast aluminum rails.

Gnaar... 44! forget welds and quickly attached to the tube guide:
Image

Too bad that one later, after the paint apply nothing more of the whole etched parts and métal looks .....

Application of anti-rust paint:
Image

Image

Image

Applying the base color before was slightly pre chat benefits:
Image

Image

What I thought about what camouflage pattern it should be later ........ I have twice, while I was already at the muster of camouflage everything again discarded.
Here is à part thereof pattern with sharp edges

Was covered by Pattafix, to remove residue-free I transported the model always in the freezer. Unfortunately, this may result in slightly higher temperatures (such as under a desk lamp) coming to stay the residues on the model. Is it cold falllen the Pattafix rapidly. Easier than taping by the way :)
Image

It looked easy to clinically clean out .... So I decided for easy transitions and blurred edges.

So, please do not immediately vomit;) the colors and transitions still change by the Washington passages.

The basic pattern emerges:
Image

Image

The split half circles created using a template
Image

Image

In between the container for the pipe wiper linkage attached:
Image

Image

The other colors for the camouflage patterns are applied:
Image

Image
Attach the decals, it will remain with the insignia .... there could never be resolved properly as the ball lightning appeared.
Meanwhile, the IVer is in Washing, the colors are not as bright and dark slightly.
'm Still superior to performing at how far I wear. But too much is not who came not far;)

Update X

The drive is far finished, only some dust and grease and fat are still missing.

Image

Somehow I always find nice if something dangling on chains ..... here is the sealing cap:
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Also, the first pieces of equipment to be fixed

Image

Image

The chain brackets are not quite finished:

Image

Image

Image

Front views:
Image

The driver's vision block was made ??of Plexiglas and a negative ......
Image

Image

Image

Image

It also assumed the angle mirrors were mounted for the two gunner including armor protection.
Image

The prisms or glasses were black spotted out and poured through Vallejo Still Water . This results in a shiny glass-like surface.
Image

Image

Image
Image

the antennais from ABER. This is stored on a rubber intake. Thus, it swings when driving through beautiful and forth

Image

Image

Image

finally connected everything put together, screwed or glued. Now some recent signs of wear are silently applied and a few quirks and damage removed. So, the guns and cannons have to look even a little metallic and hackneyed and a little dirt under the chainplates.

Welcome Graf.

This is very exciting and amazing detail - although (like your avatar) a little scary..!

Shame we cannot see all of your photos (or is it just me?) - I do not think the site can take more than 10 for each post.

Referee - can you give some help here?
